What breed are they? They look like short mongolian ponies.

God knows. I know my family have the common Somali horses and 5 mares and 1 stallion that are Arabian horses.


The Somali ones are smaller but more robust and more suitable for the environment.

There are 2-3 breeds......the most prized being the Nugaal.

Nugaal is not a breed.

Idk but they look tiny compared to horses you see here in the west

The somali people with the deepest tradition of horse breeding are the people of the Nugaal valley, sanaag and Bari region, namely the Harti. The horses they breed are just a branch off the greater arabian family. The people of Nugaal and Bari were known for fielding entirely mounted armies. They felt proud of this fact and called themselves "fardafuul" in their poems. The horses are about 14 to 15 hands high.
