Mogadishu (RBC) Senior Al Shabab commander who has fought in Puntland’s Galgala mountains Sheikh Mohamed Said better known as “Sheikh Atam” has today surrendered to the security forces of the Federal Government of Somalia, RBC Radio reports.

Sheikh Atam who has not been heard for the last two years has been seen in a press conference in the Ministry of Information in Mogadishu, where the Information Minister Mustaf Dhuhulow also spoke to the reporters.

“I decided to surrender to the government after having realized that the leader of Al Shabab and his group was not serving the interest of the Islam. They kill instead the Muslims and they claim they are Muslims,” Sheikh Atam.

He has strongly condemned Al Shabab’s top leader Ahmed Abdi Aw Mohamud [known as Godane] for his strict and brutal acts against the vulnerable society of Somalis.

Sheikh Atam said his motive to surrender to the government was meant to safe his life from the execution of Godane who always turns to those who disobeys his orders.

“I also came to encourage the peace and oppose any violence and the violent groups,” he openly said.

Sheikh Atam is the second senior commander who surrenders to the government security since last year. Senior commander Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys who was once one of the top leaders of Al Shabab has surrendered to the government mid-last year.

The surrendering of Sheikh Atam is a big blow on the militant group which has its second largest base in Puntland.
