I've always wondered this>

Whenever I'm flying to Europe or Africa why does the plane fly on the east coast of the US,then over Nova Scotia and finally through the UK...why can't it just go straight over the Atlantic ?

B) Business feasibility
C) Safety

Instead of wasting your limited neurons looking for gender change and cross dressing accessories, you should have paid attention in your geography class.

Eastern US is closer to Africa and Europe than the West......very simple son. From West you will need to make a round trip across Asia. In the East you also have important hubs such as New York City where all serious players need their presence felt.

I remember it having to do with the fact that earth is a sphere - airplane routes called the great circle: the distance crossed is shorter when in a curved circle. When you're looking at the map flat, it looks like over the ocean route would be a shorter distance, when in fact its not. That's the distortion caused by flattening the globe.

In terms of important hubs, it's only relevant when these airports are along/or close to the predetermined routes, then it's financially feasible to stop for transit/refuelling.

Most people have a very misconstrued conception of the earth. For example they think north America and Europe are bist than they are. I'll show you a good video about it.
