I am,A 17-year-old boy has been arrested and charged following Sunday evening’s sex assault in the city’s southwest.
The Calgary Police Service Sex Crimes Unit has charged the unidentified youth with:
Sexual assault with a weaponRobberyPossession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
The identity of the accused has not been released in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
The teenager was arrested without incident Wednesday afternoon in northwest Calgary. According to police, the suspect, who has lived in Calgary for approximately six months, surrendered himself to CPS members. The suspect had previously resided in Montreal.
"The public support we had from the media and getting the pictures out there, we did receive a lot of tips from the public," explains Staff Sergeant Bev Voros of the CPS Sex Crimes Unit."We give credit to the media for covering this story and allowing us to have these tips come forward."
On Sunday evening, a woman in her twenties was followed by a suspect on Calgary Transit. The victim was assaulted in a green space in Canyon Meadows after departing from a city bus.
The victim suffered minor injuries in the attack. Staff Sergeant Voros says the victim has been made aware of the suspect's arrest.
The teenage suspect is not believed to be responsible for any additional sex crimes currently under police investigation.
"We have an amazing analyst in the Sex Crimes Unit," explains Voros. "She has gone through everything within Calgary looking for matching M.O.'s and descriptions of the offender and, at this point, in the last six months, I can tell you we don't have anything matching the M.O. in Sex Crimes."
