Extending SL army beyond combat

Why doesn't the SL gov outsource other roles to the national army? The SL forces need a major shake-up, they lack proper training, equipment, proper division in role and do absolutely nothing - yet their income is increased. We should be giving them more developmental tasks like road-building, civil service and bureaucracy, factory and plant building etc. to get the most out of them. It also means we can conscript more into the army rather than the current 15,000-30,000 currently serving. It will ensure an training and ready reserve army as well as a large standing force. There are currently a large of unemployed youth both educated and uneducated. Why not use them not just for combat purposes but also civilian projects like river diversion, dam building etc. Education and living expenses would be subsidised and employment would be guaranteed and this would mean we'd have a standing army of 100,000-300,000 and a reserve of 500,000-1,000,000. It would be more affordable because they' be performing multiple roles and services.

Have you absolutely lost your mind? We are a population of only 3.5 million what are gonna need 500,00-1,000 00 Army personel for? Whatare we Indonesia?

Somaliland is capitalist country not communist, the army are not designed to undertake develoment projects. they are paid just for national security. but the government is using clans to build roads etc instead of the army. even clans do not work for free but the workers are paid to build their own roads.

You're not very bright are you? We are surrounded by enemies and we are next to ethiopia who can invade anytime it suits them. I also said a reserve of 500, 000 to 1,000, 000, they are not active soldiers but back up if war happens.

:mindblown: What has capitalism got to do wiith the state of SL's armed forces. They are not just paid for national security, they are paid to sit on their arses and chew qaat. God help us if a real army invades with these qashin to defend us.

Seriously, do you guys read what you type?

Liquidh please stop being a drama queen. At the most we need only about 100,000 in total, reserves included and they need to concentrate on training well and only do other tasks during times of natural disasters, and may be take part in building vital infrastructure like roads. Qaad should be banned from the country all together and no one should chew army or otherwise. Look at Isreael, how big do you think their armed forces are even though they are surrounded by 300 million arabs? Its quality that matters not quantity.

I'm sorry for being rude. I have low sugar because I'm fasting.

You are right, in an ideal world we'd have only 100,000 to 200,000 standing force. They would be highly trained and extremely well-equipped. However we are a poor country right now with extreme levels of unemployment and a huge lack of infrastructure. Inshallah when we have an economy we can reduce our armed forces for a more smaller more efficient unit. But right now, this is what we need.

Even 200,000 is still too many, but I agree with everything else you said. See Liquid you could be reasonable if you tried lol.

bro 500,000!!!!!!1
are you nuts, even north korea and Eritrea do not come anywhere near such figures.
Nazi germany did not come close to half of those levels either!!!!

maximum we can do is 200,000 reservists and a regular army 1/4 of that at 50,000.

but yes doing non-millitary jobs is a good idea,
the us army corp of engineers formed 200 years ago spent most of its time building , bases, forts, bridges and roads.

Yeah 500,000 is over-kill. Although, didn't the Eritreans have a million-man army?

Now that I've think about it. 50,000 sounds reasonable for a standing army. 10 Legions/divisions of 5000 men each. Maybe even a mobilized artillery battalion of a 1000 in each legion/division leaving 4000 infantry in each.

eritreans have a 250,000 army and can mobilize another 500,000 maximim.
they are conscripting like the europeans in world war 1.

What do you mean, as in forced to join the army? Isn't that what you're supposed to do during wartime?

i meant scale..
the UK only has about 200,000 today when they had over 3 million under arms during world war 2.

That's because WWII was total war against a determined and more powerful enemy. Who do they fight nowadays, Afghanistan, Iraq, Argentina etc. All of those countries can be swept aside with less than 50,000 men and the British navy.
