Somaliland the land of self made entrepreneurs

Hargeisa , July 17 2014 - Somaliland is not a recognised country and yet it holds a high position among the African countries that have self made entrepreneurs.
Most of these entrepreneurs have started from scratch after the end of the civil war in Somalia and the secession of Somaliland from greater Somalia in 1991. Great businesses like Daallo airlines and Dahabshiil are owned by self made entrepreneurs who came out to light in the early 1990s .

I remember in 2004 when Sacaadadiin shop was medium sized Hargeisa-style store sliced between Maaweel hotel and Daallo airlines. Today that business has turned into a huge market with multistory building stuffed with all kinds of merchandise from furniture to food and clothing .This is yet another business run by a self made entrepreneur from Somaliland.



Hundreds of businesses in the the retail and telecommunications sector are run by self made entrepreneurs in the country . Telesom , Telecom , Ambassador Hotel , Mansour Hotel and others are all new businesses that have been established by self made entrepreneurs after 1991.



What all of these men have in common is that they are successful entrepreneurs. They are some of the most successful entrepreneurs of our era. They have built their respective companies from small businesses into international powerhouses. They may have different styles, but they are all cut from the same cloth. They are the go-getters who don't take "no" for an answer and believe everything is possible (Ask men).They are the role models of the younger generations of Somaliland . They will lead Somaliland into market economy and will eventually make it the Singapore of the Horn of Africa.
This is why Somaliland is a land of self made entrepreneurs.

That's both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing because it means that there are at least a few ambitious and industrious individuals in SL. But entrepreneurship is not a sign of progress. It usually means we are a very poor country and the state is not providing jobs or growth. Wealthy nations don't usually have a lot of entrepreneurs.
