Qurbajoog in Hargeisa

Post by EvolSyawla »

So I was at the Book Fair yesterday. Great experience.

There was a little section on Youth employment and empowerment. I learned a few things, and got a real sense of sadness for the students and graduates here...they all go to these half-ass universities (where the owner just built a crazy sized mansion from the tuition fees collected) where their degrees mean absolutely nothing (think Everest college for my Can/American friends). And no one wants to hire people who don't know enough English to help them be globally competitive, and who will take a pay-cut from their earning expectations, etc etc, including the fact that tribalism is so difficult to get past - You can't get a job if you don't know someone very well or aren't clan members.

Alot of great points were raised. Great night. Tonight will be Phinks favorite night, Women's Literature lol, because how dare we have a night geared solely towards our abilities and talents.

Moving on to the thread point:
Afterwards, we went to eat at a well known restaurant called Summertime. And I say this with all respect and no insults, but rather as a sister who is confused:

Why have all the men become so FAT? 8/10 guys who walked past and were outsiders had a large tummy, dabo weyn and bidaar (unavoidable, but harder to ignore when you are huffing and puffing getting around). I was surprised. I can honestly say that in my time here, the local men are far more attractive. Yeeesh.

Image
Get it it together guys. That extra order of chicken and chips just isn't worth it.

EvolS, what exactly goes on at the fair? Are the locals encouraged to write? Are there more books in Somali than in English?

Oh and summertime Image Image Its the one right next to a uni (Golis?), right?

We had to cough up 40$ for FREE DELIVERY pizza! Never felt so scammed in my life. Don't make the same mistake.

Yea I always see the free delivery ad but thanks for that heads up lol I knew there was a catch. Steep minimum order though... and yes, beside Golis.

The wait times for food are abysmal, but I met alot of people who were eager to socialize during the hour long waits lol so that was nice.

Macaaney I will check out the book sale today and try to take photos.. Last night the only intention was to listen to the panel speak.

So, the book fair is indeed a dating festival. As for fatness, even the lil somali boys look overweight nowadays. I blame the women- though. All ur taunting and bullying of skinny brothers will lead to folks going to the other side of spectrum.

Agreed. The crowds pretty chill and laid back. Randomers strike pleasant conversations with you - which I don't mind.

Plus, I like the outdoor gazebo style summer house setting. quite dope. Image

As for the photo's and your feedback, I look forward to it!

Lmao meeting people has nothing at all to do with dating. I wouldn't have noticed the bellies if they weren't staring and trying to talk with us. And no. Blame yourselves. We don't tell you to stuff your faces in America or Europe. Have some control loll

Lol waraabe, is it as social as summertime? We sat next to a group of ladies from UK and immediately hit it off. I hate pretentious environments.

^^This.

I was also wondering if the guest speakers (educators, authors, artists etc) present in English? I hope not. I went around to several schools and universities. Seems to me that they aim merely to flaunt their level of education whilst presenting. The audience doesn't benefit, it reduces events that should be of enlightenment to a mere show.

How is that the case. If they have excellent content in their presentation you should appreciate it. I don't get it. A woman called out one of the presenters last night saying ok we get it, you speak English. Now speak in OUR language. And everyone fkng clapped. It was said in a very disrespectful way as well. Not everyone there speaks Somali, And I doubt people who present in English are trying to show off. Its an international event.

Best part is, someone complained that no one is presenting in Arabic and suddenly everyone got excited and applause like crazy. Confused ass Somalis . The hell are they on about? Arabic is not our language, no matter how much bleach Somalis use!

l will make an appereance at the womens literature next year.lop.

Back to the topic, this is a cultural problem with the older generation. I am skinny and proud. Thing is, most of my elders in the family encourage me to eat a tonne of food and put on some weight. In their eyes it is probably better to have a calool and be slightly chubbier. Those qurbajoog guys rarely exercise and always eat carbs. If I were 2 turn up in hargysa today I am sure ppl will be ridiculing me and trying to turn into the guys you mentioned. The guys you mentioned want to look like they are loaded.big calool can be considered as a sign of that.
