I am,Mogadishu (RBC) The health officials of Mogadishu local government on Tuesday seized tones of expired food and essential drugs imported by the World Food Programme [WFP] to distribute to the Internally Displaced People in Somalia.
Dr. Abdullahi Nune, head of the health and sanitation section of the Mogadishu Municipality said the health team entered several warehouses managed by the WFP in Mogadishu and seized tones of food and important drugs with expired dates.
“We have shocked and really felt panic after realizing that some of the aid agencies coming this country are importing such these things.” Dr Nune said.
He said the expired food and drugs were all burnt out in a filed outside the capital to avoid the health problems that it could cause to the people.
Dr Nune confirmed that the food and drugs were already expired before WFP imported through Mogadishu Port. He said he was really frightened how officials claiming to be aid workers such as WFP are engaging into dangerous activities.
“This is not humanitarian but it is simply killing campaign against our people. Why does WFP import such unhealthy things into our country if they are serious about humanitarian work they claim.” he added.
“We have given a warning this time, but if they repeat other time we will do legal step against the agency.” Dr Nune warned.
Meanwhile, the Office of Mogadishu Mayor announced strict measures to control the foods and drugs imported by the aid agencies operating in the country.
The measures include severe punishment and fine against agencies those who are caught expired items in their warehouses.
On Tuesday the local government officials announced new campaign to observe the warehouses and the stores managed by the other UN and international agencies.
Meanwhile, residents in Mogadishu expressed their concerns on the heinous activities which WFP plunged into while attempting to feed expired items to the needy people in Somalia.
Last year farmers in Lower Shabelle region blamed WFP for importing unnecessary food to the region after the farmers started to produce their own agricultural products and started to sell into the markets. The agency has been known for its two decades activities to jeopardize Somalia’s local production.
In 2010, the Al-Qaeda-linked militant group Al Shabab also banned WFP and other UN agencies alleging to be spies for the western countries and as well as importing expired items including food and drugs into Somalia aimed to distribute to the most needy families.
The Al Shabab’s allegation has been rejected by WFP previously.
