MOGADISHU IN 1331 [1350s] Ibn Battuta

Mogadishu in the 1300's was one hell of a place. So organised! All visitors were registered/acknowledged, the people had a healthy diet and cuisine, many camels and goats were slaughtered each day, respect was given to the knowledgeable. People were bi-lingual and everyone had such complicated and beautiful manners:
Buying anything from a merchant below its market
price or selling him anything except in his host’s presence is disapproved of by the
people of Mogadishu.
...when a ship comes into port, it is boarded from sanbuqs, that is to say, little boats.
Each sanbuk carries a crowd of young men, each carrying a covered dish, containing food.
Each one of them presents his dish to a merchant on board, and calls out: “This
man is my guest.

Classiq,

The world has changed, but we could certainly bring back this culture.

Original Dervish,
The meaning of what a Somali is would have changed with time, many of us are descended from various other cultures; we have been trading and leading a nomadic culture for centuries, so we can still claim this Mogadishu as at least partially our own. There is no such thing as a person of 'pure blood' anything.

Xildiid,

The Berber's are an ethnic group from North Africa and the Nile Valley.

bro, people at that time had not invented qabiil yet, qabiil is a new invention and it has been proven. Greatest somali cities at that time and before were all somalis from different places. But Berbera and mogadishu as well as zailac all have rich histories and accommodated all somalis

@gedo_gurl

He was from Berbera (the city) which makes him Somali and that confutes OD's statement that Somalis can't be associated with that era.

@waraabe

The concept of qabiil arose during the 9th Century.

True, Somalis lived everywhere. For instance the Qadi of Seylac in 1800's was Hawiye.

I'm just taking the piss out of OD and his iidor bogeyman.

Why the hate? and the revisionism in here..

those Berbers were the Children of Samaale: some of them migrated south (recorded migration) and some of them remained north.

those Tribes you see in the south are the progeny of those who travelled south...

they created one of the biggest Empire ever with alot of wealth, slaves and many military conquests

During that time, Mogadishu the Arab quarters was walled, Somalis lived in the outskirts of town as nomads without proper housing and in nomadic huts and they were only allowed to enter the city during the day to sell their milk, skins and animals.
