one thing our community is really good in.
"During the holy month of Ramadan, I got a phone call from my dear sister Sofia Hersi. She shared a very sad and hearth touching story with me about an elderly Somali woman in her early 60s of age who got kicked out by a family she was staying with and she had no family here in Minnesota. She doesn’t speak the English language because she recently came to America as refugee. The elderly woman approached Sofia at the Midtown global Exchange and asked Sofia for ride and Sofia politely offered her a ride. While Sofia was driving the elderly to her destination, she started a conversation with her and asked her question about her life and that’s when the elderly woman opened up to her and told her that she wanted a ride to get her stuff and look for homeless shelter.
Sofia broke down into tears and decided to look for alternative way other than dropping her at a homeless shelter. Sofia took the elderly woman to her family’s house and the reached out to her friends and family for help and contributions. Today , the elderly woman lives in good conditioned apartment and fully furnished and without us working and coming together as one community, this wouldn’t be possible. The power of unity was proven to me that together we can accomplish great things and I hope everyone gets something out this story. Thanks to everyone who helped out.

Horta, why is it that older somali people are kicked out in the USA by their relatives? Is it because they are viewed as a burden (economic)?
I was told that even the great Daleeys (or was it another famous singer?) was once kicked out by one of her relatives.
Don't they have retirement schemes for older somalis?
The case you described above is not only specific to somalis. I think that is universal.

That was heartbreakingly beautiful. No matter where we are, count on Somalis to help each other. Especially my MN folks, we are so generous masha'Allah.

Wow.
Subhanallah, I love to see that Somalis are capable of being such beautiful human beings. I am very happy for her, and wish this generosity extended to more struggling refugees.
I wonder who would kick out an old lady?

Sometimes you have to kick out the old people, they will try to make the couple divorce.

Re: one thing our community is really good in.
early morning just woke up, went down to the ground floor at Grand Royal Nairobi, i was cool with one of the security guys so i would chat with him most morning. all kinds of characters come to the main front door so it was entertaining for me to watch the interaction between them and the security guys. this particular morning though it was busy and i was sitting there chatting way when this older frail neatly dressed gentleman showed up (somalia). at first i didn't notice him but obviously he came to see someone staying at the hotel and they (security) don't just let you go up unless the guest ok's it.. so they wouldn't let him up because whoever he came to see was not willing.
he sat down not far from where i was sitting so i greeted him and he started a conversation with me, first thing he asked was why wasn't wearing warm clothes because it was cold in Nairobi at the time but obvioulsy i've seen colder weather so it wasn't so bad for me. he asked me where i was from, he told me he had a siser in Sydney, how he was born and raised in Kismayo which i just got back from, talk about how qabiil has ruined Somalia, we talked about cancer and how my dad survived it, his kids, my kid. after talking for abit and comfortable with each other, he came close to me and said 'adeerow waan xishoona laakin dhibato noocaan baa ihesato, hooyadey waayeel dhaqtar kujirto, funds baa sugaayaa but its not getting to me as quick as i would like, adeerow icaawi'.
two things i've learned about myself, i can be really innocent and slow at times. i was caught off guard because this man did not look distressed for a moment throughout the entire time i was talking with him. he was dignified, respectful towards me and of himself, and he seem vulnerable but there was strength in his vulnerability that i coud related to. when he told me about his situation obviously i was sad for him but i was glad that he told me because a) i could help a little and b) i took away a lot from that situation about people how strong that man was even in one of his weakest moments.
i looked after him, hugged him, spent half a day with him. i pray for him and his mother who i met still..
