Hargeisa Film Festival

Post by EvolSyawla »

As some of you may already know, IREX Europe, IREX and KOW Media are organising the second edition of the Somali Peace Festival to be held September 10th 2014 in Hargeisa, Somaliland

 LH You are absolutely correct walaal. Priorities need to be fixed.

The SL government is inconceivably stupid and I have absolutely NO clue if they even have a budget to adhere to, other than monthly salaries. It just took me 30 minutes to get home, for somewhere less than 10km away.

In defence of the book-fair, it is organized by NGOs and individuals who volunteer with sponsor backing. Politicians just show up to smile in pictures. Also, if anything, these serve as a platform to inform those who may not be aware of social issues, dogmas that need to be eliminated or re-examined and just cultural awareness that doesn't involve 'qat addiction, tahriib and mental health issues'. I commend them. I just wish there was more information about these and PSAs from the government.

Somalis are a neglected people, because Silaanyo and anyone relevant do not know what public institutions are or the importance in everything you posted. A damn shame.

In the meantime, we need entertainment. I learned A LOT from the book fare about Somalis and Somalia/Lands. I hope the same and more will be gathered if I attend the film festival.

No walaal, I don't think that's the point of it. Female stars? lol, no it's a presentation of documentaries and short films on issues plaguing our people, both inland and abroad, as well as art work.

I remember someone speaking about it during the Book Fair, but I didn't expect it to be so soon.

I suppose the point of things like this is to establish a sense of peace in the country, particularly to foreigners. Imo it's probably not even for entertainment , I might be wrong.

Hargeisa is a Somali city. And if you're not a seperatist, then you believe Hargeisa belongs to Somalia, and should therefore be interested in the peaceful events going on in your country...I don't care which it is. Just don't bring your bullshit to my thread.

Ayaan, I don't know what entertainment means to you, but if it means something where you can leave your home, meet new people, socialize and have activities planned that you can attend, it's generally considered entertainment.

I don't think you're understanding what I meant. Clearly this is a culturally significant public event, and yeah, in that sense there's entertainment involved. My reply was a quick one in relation to what was being discussed about prioritising infrastructure and the economy over things like this. What I was trying to say was that this is probably part and parcel of it. When Somaliland organises things like this, we're trying to demonstrate that the country is peaceful and can hold large gatherings without being bombed etc this will encourage foreign investment, visits and ultimately money, which is what is needed for infrastructure and development. I can remember reading once upon a time that there was building made in northern ireland towards the end of the troubles which had a glass roof or some sort of glass structure as part of it. It was seen as being demonstrative of the progress made and the decrease in likelihood of bombs and other problems arising and it encouraged investment from outside the region. I assume the purpose of the book fair and other such things are like that as well. Not exclusively, obviously, but a significant amount.

Was you're first sentence in reply to me also?

I think a film festival is a fantastic idea ... Slanders can use it as a platform to bring forth the social issues that plague their country. If you go please take pictures and share ( invest in a professional camera Love).

We have some amazing film makers, but they need good actors and good stories at the other hand there are somali films with good stories but lack technology. they should together make good quality movies. mogadishu has the best actors i like saalax dheere, the best somali villain i ever seen.

Thank you for your well put answer Ayaan. Indeed, there are many reasons for and outcomes from events like this. People take from it what they'd like, whether its a shukaansi spot, or ideas for business ventures and investments. I appreciate the effort made all the same.

And you're right, regarding the show of security and stability. We seem to praise and mention it at every event, Allahuakbar. The entrance security is strong, and your body, purse, car are all checked thoroughly before you're allowed entrance.

No, first part was to the dameer above us telling me no one cares

Bonita macaaney, hell yes I'll be taking pictures. Invest in a camera? lol, let's just say I'm not that invested in taking photos for Snet. My S3 will have to suffice.

Yuusuf, we definitely have a Nollywood in the making, and bigger budgets hopefully can make the quality better. I would love to watch these, they don't look bad!

Ah! They won the first price of the traditional dance category!! - FB page

These 2 young guys won the third price of the Jury's choice and the 1st price of the people choice. In order to do their short movie they had to borrow a flipcam from a friend.... succeeding to achieve an amazing result with really low means! Congrats! - FB page

Image
Flora Graioni from IREX Europe, Abdi from KMC and some Somaliland Government representatives awarding the winner of the Film category. Congratulations!!

Hopefully with a bigger budget from 2 years ago, it will be a bigger and better event, inshaAllah.
