Married At First Sight

Who else watches this show?! For those of you who haven't heard of this show, it's 3 couples who were matched up by four experts: a clinical psychologist, sociologist, sexologist, and spiritual adviser/counselor. Hundreds of people who are looking for long term commitment sign up for the show and go through several "scientific" screening processes, including interviews and examinations. After all the assessments, the experts found 6 people who they thought would be compatible for marriage. The show is essentially a social experiment where the couples do not meet or see their spouses up until the wedding ceremony and from there, they officially get married, move in with one another, assume responsibilities of a partner for 4 weeks. After the month, the couple decide whether they want to continue their marriage or file for divorce. I can't find a trailer but here's a recent interview on The View:



The season finale is premiering next Tuesday. So folks, what are you thoughts? Do you think this is just another heavily scripted reality show using psuedo science? Or maybe the rigorous testing the candidates went through to find an ideal match is better than their personal judgment?

So I actually decided to watch the trailer, and my conclusion is thus: rehashing something old in a new package. It's only a novelty in west to have arranged marriages but people have been doing this for thousands of years. Anyways, what I noticed is that they are all good looking, in shape people. When it was mentioned one of them was in "The Bachelor" my first reaction was actor, the show is staged.

Meh, that show ain't got an interesting premise since arrange marriage is a common thing among Somalis, hell every Somali family has a bonafide matchmaker.

I love it when people look to other cultures and take a tradition out of its cultural and economic context and think it will work elsewhere. India has a low divorce rate. Maybe they're onto something with this arranged marriage thing. No, India has a low divorce rate because the the cultural stigma and economic consequences of getting divorced for most people in that country. Take away those things, and people in India would be getting divorced just as much as any other country. Possibly more. Although in reality, they'd probably just be refusing arranged marriages in the first place, because there's no need to get married

I wonder if arranged marriages (not for the sake of social creds or money) but based on personalities were brought back in frequency....maybe our growing divorce rate would calm down
