I heard that before soul is put into a body, they're hanging out with other souls up in the heavens,

Which is why the ppl u meet u either like or dislike. The ones u got on with before u were formed u like whereas the souls u did not get on with, you dislike in life..

Well some of the ulema used to say in the past that during our existence in the world of pre-material existence, the world in where we all testified to Allah's oneness, (Alasta bi rabbikum, bala shahidna), that souls who were close with each other in that realm, prior to there manifestation on earth, generally connect well if they meet each other in this realm.

There are 5 realms,
The pre-material existence
The womb
Human life
The grave/barzakh
And the Akhira.

Soul mates does not exist. It is Qadr/destiny from Allah.
