One of the greatest African music/history videos of all time
Teddy Afro's Tikur Sew music video is definitely one of the greatest African music videos of all time. The production and the story telling is in bar with the ones made in Hollywood studios. Tikur Sew means black person and it tells the great story of one of Africa's greatest warriors, thinkers, politicians and reformists of all time; Menelik II. In particular it narrates the great victory by Ethiopia over the foreign Italians at the battle of Adwa (in north Tigray).
The Italians wanted to expand from Eritrea (Menelik allowed them to occupy it as a bargaining chip and to slow them down while he developed his armies). He used the territory of Eritrea as a buffer zone but the Italians wanted to surprise him having discovered his motives. He was arming his 70,000-120,000 army with modern weapons arriving from Djibouti thanks to the French, the Russians and the British. He played each one against the other thinking way ahead and he calculated each one's own moves and knew their motives ahead.
He played their game better than themselves and when he was victorious, they were all afraid of him. It was not just in the battle field, he took every step they took better and further than they did.
Even in Ethiopian standards the story of Adwa is quiet extraordinary because so many historical rivals worked together to stop European colonization of one of Africa's oldest civilizations.
You have Nagusa Nagast (King of Kings, Nagus of Shewa, Aba Gagnaw) Menelik II, Dejazmach Balcha Safo (Aba Nefso, an Oromo warrior), Ras Makonnen (Shum of Harrar, and father of Ras Tafari/Haile Selassie, part Oromo), Ras Welle Betul, Fitawrari Habte Giorgis Dinagde (Aba Mela, Gurage), Ras Alula Engida (Tigray military commander of Tembien origin), Ras Mikael (from Wollo, he was Muslim & his real name was Mohammad Ali, Oromo), Ras Sebhat (grandson of Dejazmach Sabagadis, Shum of Agame, Irob ethnic), Dejazmach Hagos Tafari and Ras Mengesha Yohannes (son of Ethiopia's Emperor before Menelik, Emperor Yohannes IV, Tigray).
They all had their own beef with each others. Ras Mengesha for example claimed heir to the throne since his father was the Emperor and was killed by the Mahdi of Sudan. But Menelik II argued that the likes of Mengesha and Tigray nobility in general claimed to the throne of Solomonic dynasty through maternal lineage (reer abti, reer ayeeyo) while his was based on uninterrupted direct male lineage (awoowe, aabo).
The Italians sent a force of 17,000 including 56 artillery weapons to Adwa. Menelik II had in his defence 70,000 to 120,000 including 40 artillery guns. In the end, Menelik II killed 7,000 Italians, thousands of Askeris (mostly Eritrean and Somalis from Somalia), wounded 1,500 and captured 3,000. He lost about 4,000 men and another 8,000 were wounded.
Thus Tikur Sew is a dedication to the black continent and its warrior who defended her that faithful day in the small village of Adwa. A great victory like the Battle of Adwa deserves an equally great video. Well done Teddy.

Re: One of the greatest African music/history videos of all
Many Southern Somalis will have hard time knowing about this history for the black man because many southern Somalis served with the Italians as Askeris (low grade soldiers). Italy ruled southern Somalia for decades and brought thousands of them to Eritrea before putting them on the front line against the forces of Menelik.
Any African captured who was fighting for the Italians faced local justice. Menelik's commanders ordered their forces to amputate the Askeris' right hand and left leg for they had betrayed Africa and wanted to save the white aggressor.

The Italian army in Italian East Africa recruited Eritrean and subsequently Somali troops to serve with Italian officers and some NCOs. These forces comprised infantry, cavalry and some light artillery units. The Italian askaris (ascari) fought in the First Italo–Ethiopian War, Italian-Turkish War, Second Italo-Abyssinian War and World War II (East African Campaign).

Out of a total of 256,000 Italian troops serving in Italian East Africa in 1940, about 182,000 were recruited from Eritrea, Somalia and the recently occupied (1935–36) Ethiopia (small area near Adwa). When in January 1941, British Commonwealth forces invaded Ethiopia in January 1941 most of the locally recruited ascaris deserted. The majority of the Eritrean Ascaris remained loyal until the Italian surrender four months later.

Casanova,
Abti you should stick to your small debates because you're already mixing up too many unrelated things in the above sentence. The British left Ethiopia because it was "Christian" is complete rubbish and the usual excuses of the Somalis of Somalia...for they only know excuses.
The British occupied many Christian nations and of them they disliked the Orthodox the most including Russian Empire. Remember the British annexed Crimea from the Russian Empire and reduced their size before recovering in WW2 (defeat of the Nazi and occupation of Berlin).
The British already invaded Ethiopia in post-Menelik II. They invaded during the reign of Emperor Tewodros II, who himself imprisoned Menelik. Menelik escaped and Tewodros committed suicide after the British ransacked his small empire, which was then ruling parts of Tigray, Wollo and Gondar. Gojjam was pretty autonomous (rebellious region) so was Shewa (ruled by Menelik). It was Menelik who unified them all and added newly regions Sidamo, Bale, Arsi, Harar, Ogaden, Haud, Wellega and Gambella.
During Tewodros the British looted the Ethiopian imperial palace and stole thousands of artifacts (still in the British museum) in the Battle of Magdala. The idea that they cared about Ethiopia because its Christian is nothing but a myth that Somalis entertain themselves with.
looted items include

The British advances were halted because of Menelik's growing influence and powers. Menelik understood the game. He was courting the French, Russians, British, Americans, Italians and played all of them against each others. He mind did them all. They were afraid after the Adwa victory, it was a game changer.
The British was actually against the Ethiopians as was Germany. France, Russia and Turkey (Ottoman) supported Ethiopia against the Italians. France wanted to maintain her Djibouti and knew it cannot survive without Ethiopia thus the need for a railway, which Menelik himself approved.
The British were shocked and afraid. Remember they even tried to save themselves in Somaliland and were afraid to move Sheikh Madar to Hargeisa for it was too close to Harrar, where Ras Makonnen was stationed.
Ras Alula's position on the British (he did not trust them):

Ras Alula's position on the British (he did not trust them):
As for Ahmed Gurey that was about Muslims against Christians and many Ethiopian Muslims fought along side Ahmed. It was multi-national force not Somali nationalism nor search for a Somali state. It had nothing to do with southern Somalis all together. Siad Barre created that myth in his office. Likewise, Axum pre-dates Ahmed Gurey. Axum declined due to the invasion of the Cushitic Agew dynasty (Zagwe Dynasty) in the 9th century.Although he had collaborated with the British against the Mahdists, Ras Alula chief interest was to guarantee Ethiopian sovereignty, which made him very wary towards the English whom he suspected supported the Italians' encroachments. His mistrust is clearly expressed in a conversation carried out with Augustus B. Wylde, the former British vice consul at Jeddah.

Re: One of the greatest African music/history videos of all
Italy pretty much had the weakest army out of all the notable powers in Europe, any other European nation would have given the Ethiopians a battering even much less than the 15,000. Secondly the Italians were led by an inept general who didnt use the weapons at his disposal in the most useful way.
The Italians were only removed from Ethiopia, why didn't Menelik chase the Italians into Eritrea? because he knew he would have gotten his ass handed to him, guy was scared out of his wits being forced to face the Italians in Ethiopia.

The Ethiopians were just more organized than other African states whether Italy is weak or not the Xabahis defeated them. And Menelik had Russian and French Military advisers. Menelik Recognized Italian claim over Eritrea Whuchala treaty The Xabashis defeated the Italians in Adwa, but the Italians came back and Karbaashed the Xabashis into submission in 1936 wa iska ragoore 1-1.
