Mohamed, Sharif, Abdi won't help your children properly integrate. It will most likely hurt them, including and most importantly in job search.

I think the Chinese got it right. None of their children have Chinese names. Steve Yang, Joshua Zhou, Lilly Ping. I think this helped the Chinese here properly integrate. The Indians are doing it too. I know a Kurd name Shawn and a Palestinian named Danny so its also happening with other Muslim groups.

I think after 10-15 years we will start to see the Western names to emerge in Somali households.

I will call mine: Adam (Adan), Gabriel (Jibril), Micheal (Mikaael), Benjamin (Benyamiin), etc. Girls, Mary (Maryam), Sarah (Zaahra), Sophie (Saafiya) etc. The names in brackets will be for the grandparents and the African relatives to pronounce.

There will be no confusion. I wont raise them in a Somali setting. We will be like cadaans who want to know more about our Somali heritage but all we have is a uunsi as a display on the TV stand and we will keep it for generations.. to preserve our "heritage".

Thankfully in America when my kids are my age they will be the majority, hence no need to change names. I am all for authentic Somali names though -- Dirir, Roble, Geele, Donbiro, Degan, Cambaro.
