Post by Lamagoodle »

Probably the best somali dictionary. Use it as a reference.

Have you ever wondered what mathematical/biology/chemistry/physics terms are used in the somali language? Somali stories? and much more.

Check this site. It has almost all the books that were used in Somali schools.

Rooble, there are a few languages that are free from the influences of other languages. Borrowed words are common in almost all languages.

The modern somali language has been largely influenced by Arabic (trade, religion), Oromo, Bantu and Kiswahili languages because of proximity.

There is nothing wrong in borrowing words.

What gets on my nerve is not the borrowed words. Rather it is when Somalis use a foreign word to describe something we have a somali word for; for instance, Council= gole. You will hear somalis use KAAUNSIL to sound smart. Somali TV stations have become a hub for people wanting to sound smart.

Even the somali sheikhs in their summons use more Arabic words than Somali. It seems that we are in a race to the bottom.

It is funny that somali almost kill each other by claiming that an arabic word is better than an English or Italian word,

In medicine and technology, the terminologies are evolving. Let us take the word “Cancer”; in the somali language there is KUD but it does not cover all the cancer types.

I was recently asked to translate the word “website” ; generally, this is translated as “rugta” internet; some somalis use “ WEBSAAYTKA” ; others use BARTA. Darka could also be correct.

I usually use the word “ Malkada”. Malka= river bank/ dam where animals/human beings can drink without falling into the river/dam.

I have read on the other thread what a chair is called in Somali; it is GAMBAR; Also Korsi is not wrong at all. So is fadhi.

This is by far the best dictionary. Professor Cabdalla Cumar Mansuur is a well-known scholar of the somali language. He is an AUTHORITY on the somali language. He is a student of MUUSE GALAAL. NO,one and I repeat NO ONE alive can match him.

Together with Prof Annarita Puglielli, Prof Mansuur has rejuvenated the centre for somali studies at the University of Rome (this centre existed before the demise of our nation).

If you want to have the right somali terminology in education, please visit this site
http://www.indiana.edu/~librcsd/nt/db.c ... ield=&nh=1

P.s. read these books by Muuse Galaal if you want to know the somali words/concepts for sciences:
Galal Muse (1968) The terminology and practice of Somali weather lore, astronomy, and astrology
Galal Muuse (1970) Stars, seasons and weather in Somali pastoral traditions
