What type of holiday maker are you?

Post by BlackVelvet »

How do you do holidays?

Are you the couch/bed surfer - God knows as Somalis there will always be a relative wherever you're headed; you save on accommodation and you have insider knowledge of the location, win-win

Are you the guided tour person - a professional giving you the low down on all you need to know, make the most and learn the most from your holiday

Are you the all-inclusive resort stayer - family who? tour guide what? You don't want any people around you, it's your holiday it's time to relax and detox

Are you the wide-eyed wanderer - just book the flight, will see what happens when you get there holidays in particular don't need to be so precise, you're not in school anymore what's with the timetable

I only visit countries where relatives have been granted asylum so I guess I fit into the first category.

I usually take two holidays; the longer one, the somali style; visiting relatives; free boarding and lodging but I have to buy alot of presents to compensate. It is usually to Kenya, Canada and the UK.

I then take two weeks holiday(sometimes 1+1 week); most of the time all inclusive. MIy favourite destination is Toscany, Italy. I also take 3 days off to the northern part of Sweden where the sun never sets in June.

My dream is to take a bike from Northern tip of Norway, all the way to the north sea.

The thing about staying with family though isn't it a bit like being under observation? You can't really relax can you? Then again staying at a hotel in the same city as your aunt/uncle can very easily cause offence.

Jaalle marka your system makes sense - if you want a resort holiday, go where you know no one. Do you ever go on tours or are on the "go away people" mode while on holiday?

I can only do this if the "girls" are my sisters

Amira, I was kidding. I am not a holiday sort of person because every resort or destination has the same facilities as every other place. Due to globalisation, the world has become uniform. The only difference between holiday destinations is the colour of the people serving you, the geography and weather.

The exception is if you are into exploring culture or a nature enthusiast. Would like to visit the Amazon forest and Angel Falls in Venezuela. Auschwitz too.

I go to places where I don't know anyone. Sometimes, I plan it in advance; other times, I feel that I need a holiday. I tried to combine the somali style one with the other one once and it almost ended in disastor. I was staying in a hotel in a big city and I called a relative and told her that I was in town. Within a few minutes, the whole lobby was full with somalis.

I go on tours. It is well organised. You could choose the places to visit.

Depends on you taste and budget. One suggestion (it is not that expensive) is to go on a holiday cruisning; 2 weeks. A few days on the high seas; calling on ports for a 1-2 day stop overs going on tour. There are companies that provides visits to Barcelona, Marseille, Genova, Neaples, Athens etc. There are also others that focus on Niporthern Europe cities. Life on the ship is wonderful. It is a moving hotel. Depending on your ´taste cabaret , movies, sports facilities are provided etc: an icing on the cake, it is an evening dinner where the captain invites passengers; very formal

Another one, that is if you are the kind that loves to combine culture and sun, is southern spain; Andalusia, Granada. There are British companies that offer. You could visit the sites of islamic civilisations in Europe.

Finally, you could get a Eurocard on trains on continental europe and backpack.

You are welcome. Send me my 10% service charge/commission.

I forgot that there are some budget - last minute cheap all inclusive- to Thailand. Less than for a round trip to Europe sometimes. But, apart from the sun, food and floura, there is nothing much for a young woman to do.

Very specific of you lol

Well I thought of Thailand but the kind of holiday I'd like in Thailand is just too chilled out, I want to celebrate not de-stress.

Jasmine, I have been to Thailand on business trips several times. It is the fisq (vice) capital of the world. It is for men- specially old- because they feel superficially loved. Even those who claim to have high moral standards are tempted. Meel la mid ah weligeey ma arkin. Odeyaal waayeel ah oo ilmo yar yar wato ayaad arkeeysa.

I would reccomend Singapore though; too clean. There is also this wonderful shopping street called Orchid Rd.. not to mention china town, indian town and ruffles.
