Working people of SNet come in please

Post by YummyMummy »

Assalamu calaykum everyone,

Just wanted to ask general questions about your rights in the workplace. I know we're all of different backgrounds, different countries and different years of experience, but the general principles of negotiating your rights would remain fairly similar and can hopefully be applied across the board.
In shaa Allah this will be beneficial to everyone.

1) How do you negotiate your roles & responsibilities (or was it fixed upon employment?)
2) Do/did you negotiate your promotions? How did you do so?
3) Do/did you ever make a position for yourself when there wasn't a post there? Did you manage to secure payments attached to this?
4) How did you go about securing that promotion or increase in salary? What did you say/do?
5) Have you resigned from jobs before? Was it in favour of another job? How did you do so (particularly interested in people who had to write a letter of resignation, how do you do that?)

That's all for now, looking forward to your answers

There are no rights in the workplace in third world countries, specially in Somalia.

You do as you are told, and if you can't stomach the orders hurled at you. Find another job.

The only way you can demand your rights is to involve your Xildhibaan, who will gather up the toll and deal with your boss on your behalf

In Somalia, there is only 1 boss (the highest executive) you answer to despite the so called organizational structure chart pinned on your wall.

You have to cheat, lie, and kiss ass to get a promotion or even a reward. It also helps if your daddy is well known and holds a high gov position.

I'm a businessman so i only answer to myself. I can't be much of a help. Bye.

1) How do you negotiate your roles & responsibilities (or was it fixed upon employment?)

fixed from start. Some flexibility, depending on how busy I am if I cant do something I say I cant do it.

2) Do/did you negotiate your promotions? How did you do so?

No automatic promotions. Have informal discussion with current manager and recruiting manager. Apply for internal jobs.

3) Do/did you ever make a position for yourself when there wasn't a post there? Did you manage to secure payments attached to this?

Yes and yes. If you don't ask, you don't get.

4) How did you go about securing that promotion or increase in salary? What did you say/do?

See answer 2 above.

5) Have you resigned from jobs before? Was it in favour of another job? How did you do so (particularly interested in people who had to write a letter of resignation, how do you do that?)

Yes and yes. Keep it short and to the point. The content obviously depends on reason for resigning. Something like this (formatted) should suffice:

It is with regret that I inform you of my intention to leave the company due to another opportunity that has arisen elsewhere.
I hereby give the contractually required notice period of ........, with an effective leaving date of xxxxxx.
I want to thank the great team of partners, managers and other colleagues for the enjoyable and memorable time we have worked together.
Yours sincerely
YummyMummy

Union, eu laws and several other laws in place to keep masters at bay!

1) fixed
2) all they said was "would like to do this or that role"
3) no
4) be an expert and good in your role and have good awareness or knowledge in other roles in and around your vicinity! They said "you are really good at this do want to do this" and then said why not
5) just gave them the 4 weeks notice after securing another job (done this several times  )

Does my answers qualify as a JSA claimant ?

Thank you guys for the responses!

TheBlueNwhite: working in Somalia/3rd world sounds really tough, I don't envy you maa shaa Allah. Whereabouts are you in the hierarchy system of your workplace?

Octavius: a special thanks for that letter (even though it's worded for the private sector), it will come in handy if/when I need to move on in shaa Allah. I may need to interview you more about your role via PM

MoAwr: illeen shaqo dhab ah ayaad leedahay? :ohhh: Here I was thinking you are in :sland: reaping the benefits of your camel herd  We're both in the public sector, those unions :blessed: It's good to be promoted due to recognition and appreciation of your contributions to the workplace maa shaa Allah.

1. They are fixed. Any problems/tasks out of the ordinary, I just improvise and use common sense.
2. Promotions come with certain conditions that have to be met. It is way too early to demand a promotion but I've had a few casual conversations with my boss about a promotion and he was open to the idea.
3. No and no.
4. I've been with my current employer for just over a year now. No promotions thus far.
5. I've resigned from 2 jobs and I wrote a standard letter of resignation both times with 2/4 weeks notice period.

When it comes to promotion the key was in my former company that you excel and communicate that you want a promotion to him/her. If there is a spot available, your offered the position. If there isn't a position available he/she will make sure that if your doing above and beyond that you get promoted asap and in the direction of the company that you prefer.
I liked it that you got the choice to decide where you want to be in the next 5 years. Can't stand those careers you just move up the hierarchy and you don't exactly want to move in that specific direction of the company.

Fixed at first, took tests for Branch and department, and became certified, then moved my way up the food chain and got more responsibilities.
YummyMummy wrote:2) Do/did you negotiate your promotions? How did you do so?
Hit certain number end of the quarter, got promotion automatically.
YummyMummy wrote: 3) Do/did you ever make a position for yourself when there wasn't a post there? Did you manage to secure payments attached to this?
No, wtf does that even mean?

Read answer 2

YummyMummy wrote:

Fixed but able to take on more adhoc tasks and negotiate any future roles during meeting with supervisor
YummyMummy wrote:2) Do/did you negotiate your promotions? How did you do so?
Not yet however it is something that I'd discuss with management
YummyMummy wrote: 3) Do/did you ever make a position for yourself when there wasn't a post there? Did you manage to secure payments attached to this?
That's the plan InshaAllah
YummyMummy wrote:4) How did you go about securing that promotion or increase in salary? What did you say/do?

Both linked to job and performance, just say what you're looking for and what you hope to gain/have to offer
YummyMummy wrote:5) Have you resigned from jobs before? Was it in favour of another job? How did you do so (particularly interested in people who had to write a letter of resignation, how do you do that?)
No I haven't but I'd assume the letter would depend on your reason for resigning - just tell them in a very formal and polite way why you've decided to live and the last day you'll be working having worked whatever notice period is in your contract

fixed

2) Do/did you negotiate your promotions? How did you do so?
I write down all the extra work/tasks that I do which are out of the scope of my job and when the yearly review comes I use them as a negotiation tool.

3) Do/did you ever make a position for yourself when there wasn't a post there? Did you manage to secure payments attached to this?
No

4) How did you go about securing that promotion or increase in salary? What did you say/do?
I market my skills/experience

5) Have you resigned from jobs before? Was it in favour of another job? How did you do so (particularly interested in people who had to write a letter of resignation, how do you do that?)
Yes/Yes/main points are: thank them, mention the reason why I am leaving and then inform them when my last day is,

That's all for now, looking forward to your answers
