A suggestion that white and non-black protesters limit their visibility and “stand behind black folks” at vigils in Ottawa and Toronto in solidarity with the people of Ferguson, Mo., has sparked a heated debate on social media.

Bilan Arte, one of the Ottawa event organizers, says on the vigil’s Facebook page that “white/non black allies” should “refrain from taking up space” and “never be the centre of anything.”

The same message was posted by a man named Rodney Diverlus on the Facebook page for the Toronto rally.

Arte also asks whites and non-blacks to not speak to the media, saying “black voices are crucial to this.”

The post prompted more than 100 comments, with one man asking “is this an anti-racist rally or a pro-segregation one?”

Arte, deputy chairwoman with the Canadian Federation of Students, says on her own Facebook page that she’s received upwards of 50 messages from “righteous upset white people” taking issue with the post.

To the Ferguson case: Are there racist white cops in America? Sure. Are there killer cops? Sure. Are there cop killers? Sure. The latter two are a combustible tandem and can potentially go off anytime a black youth is confronted by a white cop.

That fateful day Michael Brown woke up and decided he was going to rob a store and intimidate others and take his friend for a joy ride. Why was the testimony of his friend discounted by the prosecutor's office? Could it be because he was not a credible witness? Young black men have arrest and conviction records at a frighteningly very young age, 15-18, which automatically culls them out from any meaningful employment in America. This and of itself is modern day slavery, the "man" keeping blacks down. The only way to defeat whites and their racism is to intellectually empower yourself, sadly not many blacks understand this concept.

The school-to-prison pipeline provides a steady supply of inmates to stimulate job growth and fuel the prison industrial complex. Perhaps their slogan is right. Of course they don't care about maddow people. That's why they want them to be dead before 25, gay, in prision or head to the nearest abortion clinic which just so happens to be disproportionately in low-income black neighbourhoods. It works well to reduce their numbers. We'll what do you know white supremacy is working and the supply of illegal immigrants that work for cheap is sadly replacing AAs. AAs really need to get it together, put yourself first because no else will.

Truthfully, Somali issues are more complicated and distinct from the AA ones. Sure there are many Somalis locked up, from single-parent households (divorced or widowed), but the first accounts of racism Somalis have ever faced where outside of their homeland. This racial profiling and systemic racism stuff is new to them. I don't believe in linking up hands with people because they are a dislocated Africans. I'm a fundamental believer in the do-for-self philosophy. You can't expect anyone to solve your problems and identify with your plight more than your ethnic group i.e. Somali. Not to mention stop latching yourself on to the causes of other people. Fix your own first.

Good post. AAs need to become a very closed community to survive and none of their "black leaders" are really addressing it. If they did that they would do very well, like they were in the 30s when they had "black wall street". They need to be like that, but without the forced segregation of that time of course. Linking up hands will just cross up lines and confuse everything because we have different issues. Systematic racism can be fought threw economic barriers, if you can create jobs for your people you can shield them to a certain degree. We all have communities we can serve. When you go to school to be a doctor, you should be looking to open an office in the neighborhood with your people.

Theres also this weird culture growing that I notice some somali woman falling into. This whole feminist thing and its usually accompanied by the gay/lesbian movement. You don't have to share same plight in order to stand up against injustice or simply just to show support. And Somalis are a minority in almost every community. If you are just selfish and think about yourself who is going to support you in your time of need.
