Horn of African Privilege

There appears to be a checklist that requires all the ticks marked off for one to be considered African and aesthetically pleasing in the west. I never knew what HOA privilege was until recently. Apparently, its about the archetypical horn of African phenotype being seen as standard of beauty among people of sub-Saharan African decent. So non-HOA blacks will feel flattered for being mistaken for a horner. They might also go to great lengths by using makeup to contour their features or shell out money to ruin their hair and features to look the part.

If only they knew companies prey and exploit their insecurities to get them to spend mega bucks. If only they channeled their lacag toward something more productive.

What are your thoughts?

It is because people from the horn are pure african but can conform to caucasian standards of beauty. That is what everyone wants after all, looking caucasian but not "selling out" your race.

Cherine for goodness sake interject. Don't criticize the thread without any input. You could have mentioned that economically speaking Somalis, Ethiopians, Djiboutians and Eritreans aren't doing too well relative to other countries in Africa/East Africa i.e. Tanzania and Kenya. Even if the Horn of African look is more sought after, what does it matter if you are technically worse off at the moment. C'mon give me something constructive to work with.

I don't think insecurity is a Somali trait. However, there are a lot of insecure Somalis these days. They were a proud people in fact some still are, although the modern Somali is a transmuted version of the one from yesteryear. However, there is one constant Somalis have always focused on looks. For goodness sake if you have something that stands out, they will point it out and call you by that name. It's not only Somalis that act as braggarts and boast about how they look. Also, Somalis aren't the only ones pointing out how they look. This is a reflexive process (two-way). Also, anyone who sees their physical features as a mark of pride (alone) certainly doesn't realize they will depreciate in value, and doesn't feel too great about themselves.
