What's the occasion? It should say what the dress code is: Black tie (Black suits & bow ties), white tie (any suits), smart (business/work ), smart casual (really good dark jeans & crisp office shirt, no tie), casual (normal jeans & t-shirt & jumper combo). Gala would be either of the first 3 methinks, less likely to be smart though.
Double check online for black & white tie events. Hope this helps.
