Banana farming in Somalia- Afgooye District

Post by thegoodshepherd »

Beerta Gacal, Afgooye

The most interesting video I have seen thus far about farming in Somalia. Some observations:

1-There is a lot of manual, un-mechanized tasks. I think it is because labor is so incredibly cheap.
2- The banana plantation is much larger than I imagined farms in Somalia to be.
3-Almost all of the workers are from the Bantu minority group. They seem to work together as families.
4- The managers (the male and female accountants) are ethnic Somalis.

Please post your opinions on this interesting video

Few Corrections

1) There are no Bantu in any place other than Jubba's in Somalia. The Jareer in the Shabelle Valley are Shiidle and just called Jareer Weyne and Speak Af-Maxa Tiri and Af-Maya while Bantu Speak Bajunii.
2) Labor is no Longer Cheap but most of these people have lived and worked in the farms their entire life. For Example an entire Generation of more than 100 Years sometimes have lived in the same farm.
3) Some of those Farms in Afgooye and Balcad can be 300+ Acres and quite large. For example beerta Sheikh Zayed.

Have you ever been to a plantation on the river?? Are there regular people who have land next to the river??
Or is all the land on the river banks owned by large-scale farmers??

Depends, Some of the Farms are small while others are quite large but the entire land next to the river is obviously used for Farms but after the state of Somalia Collapse many farms just were left and thus collapsed. Those who were able to keep up their farms were loosing money doing so because obviously Somali Banana and Fruits were banned and no export other than dried lemon which u hardly break even.

Have you ever been to Somalia? There are no Bantu in Somalia except in the Jubba Valley and even there, population wise their quite insignificant.

I feel sorry for the Somali Bantus, we should all live equally smh. From the video it seems like they're in some sort of Slave labour smh.

And the children as Well Working....WTF Wallahi! That pissed me off. How come no one mentioned that? They should be in schools not to mention that it should be against the freaking law!!! What the hell man?! I found that disturbing & disgusting

I also don't know what Osob is talking about btw. Bantu is now a Sub-Racial grouping and not just a linguistic one in Somalia. FYI most Bantus even in Jubba speak Af-Maay. Those who speak Mushunguli are in the minority. Even in the Shabelle (mostly Lower)...most speak Af-Maay. The only exceptions are Reer-Jowhar Shiidle and Hiiraan Makane who are Af-Maxa Tiri speakers.

Mushunguli and Bajuuni are the same people only difference is Bajuuni some of them mated with the Arabs and other Swahili people but both are descendants of the slaves brought to the shores of Somalia you ignorant dimwit. The Shiidle and Jareer in the Shabeele valley are totally different and not to be confused with Bantu Somalis. Shiidle have been in the country much much longer while Bantu are newly arrived.

All the Jareer works are get paid well, their children's go to schools and Dugsi quraan and its look after by the farm owners, like my uncle, some of the farm owners look after entire villages well been not only paid them but also supply seeds and machinery to plan their own small scare food to eat and sale, provide Macalin dugsi quraan the once that work for us my uncle even pays their children's school fees.

They have always work for us we look after them.

Jareer and Bantu are same. The only difference is one is a Nickname " jareer" and the otherone is their origin " Bantu" but the tern Somali bantu is taken by mushunguli to seek asylum.

Clearly either of you have never been to Somalia or are just Ignorant. Bantu are not the same as the Jareer found in the Shabeele Valley. If you are going to use the word Jareer to describe negroes than Yes both are Jareer but Shiidle Jareer and Somali Bantu dont even speak the same language.

Thanks, it is a nice video, we should get rid of nomadic life and start teaching our people how to farm and become productive.

Osob is right, the name Bantu is a recent political development, but sadly, vocal Somalis who never were from the riverine areas and some reputable news organisations use it interchangeably with other jareerweeyne clans like Shiidle. Even though the Gosha Makane and Mushuungulli Somali people have been living in the south longer than those who are now fighting to control politically some the regional administrations there, they were always highly productive people and have positively contributed to us Somalis becoming self-sufficient in food production. Unlike the Shiidles who produced great singers, academics, comedians, army generals, great Somali footballers, the majority of the Gosha Makane and Mushuungulli people didn't integrate or assimilate with 'other Somalis'. This video shows how productive they are when compared to us, the civilised nomad, a.k47 carrying man fro, a noble clan and fighting endlessly till the next bad draught.

Nassib bundo, the great warrior who led the famous slave rebellion in southern somalia, was from the mighty jareer clan.
