Does Somaliland Have Safari land?

I'm googling images of Somali wild life, and I wanted to know do we have any natural safari like areas? Deep in the miiyi where you can find antelopes, _____ (Insert any other wild animals)____ that would be good to sight-see? One area where you can readily see different species?

Would be good for someone interested/who has the funds, to build a little resort somewhere and team up with a travel agency to get things poppin.

I know many people, both diaspora and foreigners, would like to visit our lands. However, a certain degree of safety (from evil folks and animals alike ) and the assurances of tour guides would be helpful.



P.S before anyone gets psycho qabiil on me, I'm asking about Somaliland because that's where I live.

I went to Ngorongoro National Park in Tanzania a few years ago, it's an enormous crator where hundreds of different species live:

The jewel in Ngorongoro's crown is a deep, volcanic crater, the largest un flooded and unbroken caldera in the world. About 20kms across, 600 meters deep and 300 sq kms in area, the Ngorongoro Crater is a breathtaking natural wonder.

I wish Somalis had something like this. How is Ceerigabo? Anything exciting to see other than the gazillion trees?

The civil war has really done severe damage to Somalia's wildlife. Our mega-fauna population is almost non-existent, and the elephants, rhinos, hippos, lions, and cheetahs are almost all gone

I don't know if the Laskhorey/Erigaabo part of Somalia can sustain a safari, but I know the Jubbaland area of Somalia as well as Hiiraan can DEFINITELY sustain a great wildlife safari. First we need to stabilize the area, put to death all Somali bandits and highway robbers, and then restore the environment to it's original condition.

Then we would be forced to purchase rhinos, lions, and cheetahs from countries like Mozambique and Zambia. Bring them back to Somalia. But doing something like this would take years, but I'm sure it could be done.

I'm not so sure the Kenyans would be too pleased with us taking their customer base though Their entire economy literally relies on tourism, so this will do huge damage to their economy. They don't like competition

Unfortunately, a few years after the civil war the reer miyi went ape-shit on lions and hyenas alike. The Lion population was decimated and never recovered, however the hyenas' did. We used to have giraffes and elephants but they migrated to ethiopia. Ostriches can still he found in certain parts of the country especially in the eastern regions.

I don't think opening a safari park is a wise thing to do, knowing Somalis and their penchant for being unruly and uncooperative

You're right, hwy robbers are actually very common. On the way to Garowe/Puntland we need SPU to protect shipments into Puntland. I don't know/care what qabiil they are, but they are definitely an issue for road shipments.

The East African 5 rely heavily on tourism. Tz, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi & Uganda (last three are trying their hardest to match Kenya/TZ) are all very well known for classy lodges and safari tours.

Even if it takes a few years, I am sure the government can do it...with pressure from us. They need to develop ways to make it possible to expand our service sector, if our manufacturing industry isn't up to par. We can be great thinkers and entrepreneurs, it is the government that is holding individuals back. Hard to build tourism when the government can't control anything but their dinner.

Chillin - Walaal, Unruly because everyone is trying to govern themselves and their areas. If the government held a heavy hand, maybe there could be some progress?

We don't need wildlife parks. We need industry and factories. We need roads and power stations. If you want to see animals, kenya is just across the border.

Why visit someone else's land when we have the capacity for it here. I've been to TZ's and I know there is a lot of money to be made from people wanting to look at animals. You should be supportive on anything that creates jobs, builds service industry and can be taxed (in a perfect world, taxes would actually benefit us).

It's a good idea, regardless of how negative you are about it.

Also, I don't know if you've noticed, but the government doesn't care. In silaanyo's time he's approved and completed maybe two roads. Lol It's the entrepreneurs building this place.

I'm not negative. I'm just saying we have bigger priorities than devoting large areas of arable land to wild animals. We can build a zoo but tourism and safaris are not a useful industry to have. When we have a large, robust and technologically-savvy economy - then we can have time and privilege to worry about wildlife and conservation.

The best they have are the plains of togdheer where the only animals are a variety of antelope and the usual cattle, 100 years ago there were rhinos and lions, and cheetahs, but they all fled during the war of 1977 and the wars in the 80s.

There were 4 national reserves in the old Somali republic. 3 of the reserves were located in Somalia. The one that was located in SL was the Gacan Libaax reserve. In the 80's you still had lions and leopards. The last elephants were shot in the late 50's. My uncle who was a veterinary and later the general manager of the livestock industry told me that in Somalia there were approximately 400.000 elephants in the inter riverine area.

If you read old diaries written by British explorers you will know that Somaliland was completely different 100 years ago. Elephants were roaming outside Berbera and in the hinterland you had black rhinos, lions, leopard, cheetahs, antelopes, the Greater and lesser Kudu etc.

In hunting circles Somaliland was known as one of the best and most accessible hunting grounds in the world. Unfortunately, it destroyed the wildlife.

The only place where a Safari park/reserve would work would be in J/Hoose....near the Kenyan border.
A marine reserve would be suitable in S/L.

During my recent miyi trekking, I have seen plenty of deeros, hyenas, sakaaros, goroyos and the local have said the big cats are making slow come back because of the abundance of these ugaadhs. My friend on his recent trip to the East of Somaliland sighted a cheetah, near the border between sanaag/sool.

Would like to see the daalo/surud regions!

I hear there are a lot of hyenas near the Djibouti border......they have been decreasing in numbers in the past few years though.
