good news from somalia

Post by obstacle24 »

It's choppy waters for torrent sites at the moment. No sooner was the Pirate Bay back online after two months, it was claimed to be an FBI honeytrap to catch illegal filesharers.

Things have been similarly rough for another popular, high-profile torrent source, KickAss torrents.

KickAss appeared to have had its ass kicked off the web by officials yesterday, when visitors to the site were greeted with an error message.

The site had been using a Somali (.so) top-level domain which, it had been thought, was safe from the clutches of digital law enforcement and tenacious copyright lawyers.

But yesterday the site was seized by the Somaili .so registry, run by the country's Ministry of Information, Post and Telecommunications and listed as "banned".

But torrenters are nothing if not resourceful. A few hours later the site appeared back at its old .to domain, registered in Tonga.

The file-sharing safe haven had been using the Tongan domain up until November 2014 when it switched to the Somali address.

KickAss has become one of the biggest torrent trackers on the web (helped by the absence of the Pirate Bay) and has become a popular target for those fighting against copyright piracy.

It's not been confirmed whether the takedown of the .so domain yesterday was in response to requests from copyright holders.

However, at the time of writing, it appears that both the .so and .to domains are back up and running. Which means double trouble for those trying to take down the filesharers.
