The practice of hiring foreigners in Somalia must end
This goes for construction, to restaurants to NGOs.
I saw not too long ago the Twitter account of a white British guy who had a official title in Villa Somalia. He consults President Hasan Sheikh and lives in Mogadishu. It didnt look like a temporary contract job of a few months. He had a Villa Somalia ID card and everything

I have started a project back home. Just because I'm staying here permanently doesn't mean I don't care about my people. I will go back home around age 45-50 when I have the proper experience if I'm still alive. I am only 23. And I can't speak Somali at the moment. I can't communicate with the locals. I will still go back to visit as I have done a few times before

Somalia is an NGO country. It is also incredibly corrupt. An cadaan guy with a community college diploma would get a top job before a Somali top graduate due corruption and bribery.

Re: The practice of hiring foreigners in Somalia must end
Sometimes when it comes to development, expertise comes first. This is a harsh truth which we Somalis are gonna have to accept. When Japan was first industrializing in the 1870's, they often asked for--and received---advice from White British technocrats and engineers. The same thing occurred in China in the 1980's and in many other countries around the world. Even in Eastern Europe, most of the development and industrialization was in fact carried out by German experts, who brought their experience and knowledge and these German experts helped develop Eastern Europe. Only decades later did the Eastern Europeans obtain enough experience and expertise to run their own economy without the help of foreign German experts.AbdiJohnson wrote:This goes for construction, to restaurants to NGOs.

The same goes for Somalia. Somalia doesn't have a large educated class. We don't have a large supply of engineers, doctors, legal experts, professors and technicians. We don't have men with experience running complex systems. We really have no choice wallahi. We HAVE to hire foreigners or else we will be left in the dust.
My hope is that we Somalis learn from the foreigners as much as possible. We should learn to create and sustain complex systems, and then take over from there. But this will take time, maybe decades. I just wish that more Somalis in the West take advantage of this wonderful opportunity they have in front of them, and they should enroll themselves in engineering courses (mechanical, chemical, aerospace, etc.). We need a large educated class of Somalis, whether it's in the skilled trades, the legal system, or in the education sector. Only then will we have the ability to run our own economy without the help of foreigners.
Somalia comes first. The Somali people come first
Re: The practice of hiring foreigners in Somalia must end
In addition to it being virtually a UN colony its compounded by the fact Somalis look down on doing jobs involving manual labours such as construction and plumbing; so its a cultural issue first and foremost. I remember reading an article linked here where training of these sort of jobs was being offered in the NFD but no-one came to take it. Imagine this occurring in any other poor country? absolute madness.
Secondly the number of diaspora and foreigners taking jobs and driving living costs up making it harder for the average poor and unskiled/semi skilled native is worth mentioning.

Re: The practice of hiring foreigners in Somalia must end
There are plenty of Somalis with considerable expertise in many fields and I am sure many of them have applied for jobs in Somalia only to be rejected for a foreigner.
I recently met a Somali who is a project manager. The work he does is very interesting. His work involved working with a few hospitals in transforming the way these hospitals record their data. These hospitals were using paper records. He and his team made these hospitals go from paper records to adopting a electronic medical record.
Edit: Sorry. They were not hospitals. They were family doctor offices

Re: The practice of hiring foreigners in Somalia must end
Yeah we need to change the way we look at manual labor. Every country needs a set of construction workers and skilled tradesmen. It's the only way we would ever get things done. Many Saudis have this same attitude, and they look down upon manual labor and construction, which is why they hire Indian laborers to do the work for them.Estarix wrote:In addition to it being virtually a UN colony its compounded by the fact Somalis look down on doing jobs involving manual labours such as construction and plumbing; so its a cultural issue first and foremost. We Somalis can't afford to do that. We shouldn't do that. And we should let go of the stigma of working in certain industries. We need Somalis working in ALL fields. There is honor in working an honest job.

Affirmative action has been proven to be a failure, whether it's been tried in India or the United States or Malaysia. Open up a book and actually read about the effects of affirmative action. Why do you think many US States have gotten rid of it?BaastoUnit wrote:Abdi.i believe somali bantus should get a quarter of all jobs In somalia.they will transform somalia.somali bantus should have affirmative action in schools, too.these skinnies worship dahabshill and ngos and are not as hardworking.war dadkani waa imtixaan.
My policy is: Let the best man get the job. Let the best man be accepted for the position.
Don't lower expectations for anyone. Don't lower the threshold for any position because it will lead to dramatically negative consequences in the future. Fuck Affirmative Action

P.S. Dahabshiil is ruining our motivation to work. Take that away, and those Somali men who otherwise would have been comfortable eking out a living by asking distant relatives for money, would be forced to get up and actually work every single day. It's cause-and-effect. That's all it is.
