The logic is not unsound, it's his knowledge that is lacking.

I figured it out when I was 10 and driving on the highway, and playing with a ball. I kept throwing the ball and letting it land on my hand, and didn't understand why it kept coming straight down despite the car traveling 60 mph. That simple experiment is enough for him to realize that the plane and everything on the earth is moving at the speed of the earth's rotation.
