Anyone seen the movie Lone Survivor?

Post by MaliPrince »

The movie isn't really that great (its about Americans trying to kill the Taliban) but the end amazed me. At the end of the movie, the lone surviving American soldier is being chased by the Taliban when he's saved by an Afghan tribal chief. The chief takes him to his village and when the Taliban asked for the American, he said no. This one Afghan was willing to put the lives of his entire village at risk to protect the American soldier. When asked why he did it, he said it was because of PASHTUNWALI (the tribal code of the Pashtun). In the pashtun tribal code, when a guest comes to your home, you are to protect them from anyone who wants to do them harm. Even if its your own people.

Its amazing how similar all the tribal/nomadic cultures are. Cause while watching this movie, all I could think was how similar to Somali tribal culture this one aspect of Pashtun is.

If you haven't seen the movie, here is a 60 minutes interview that pretty much summarizes it: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/survivor-60-minutes/
