My ideal Somalia

Post by tmac »

I was day dreaming earlier on the train, and this is the type of Somalia I want to live in.

1. Freedom of speech - that includes freedom to insult or offend people. Yes that includes religion.
2. Freedom of religion - Religious minorities and atheists have a right to live freely in society
3. Protection of gays - Anti gay crimes will be considered hate crimes
4. Legalise marijuana and tax it.
5. Leaglise prostitution, otherwise it will create an underground world full of pimps & violence.
6. No draft in the military. You sign up for it if you want.
7. The only crimes punishable with jail sentences would be those that infringe on the rights of others (murder, rape, assault, fraud etc). This could include selling drugs to minors, but certainly not doing drugs, growing them, or synthesising them for personal use.
8. Separation of church and state. Religion should not be considered when passing laws.
9. Science would be at the root of all policy. The only debate that would take place about the validity of things like global warming would be within the scientific community. We the people could vote on policy around scientific the findings.
10. Universal healthcare. Funded by the tax payer.
11. Universal free education. Funded by the taxpayer.
12. Natural resources that the country depends upon for survival such as oil would be nationalised
13. Welfare safety net.
14. No death penalty.
15. Strict gun control. (looking at Japan as an example)

Well in your defense, u said u were dreaming, so I won't hold it against you.

Because you would have to be on khat, or day dreaming to come up with a list like that.

Islam is the religion of the people and there should be given very careful consideration.

Religion should be private. Keep it out of government, justice system, schools and other learning institutions. If you want to have Islamic schools and Universities, by all means create private ones. But public learning institutions and the government should have religion interjected to.

How private?

Something that is simply confined to your house and mosque?

I believe that Islam is a complete comprehensive system and can play crucial role in society.

Even when you say separation of religion and the state there can never be a complete separation in a Muslim country. Never.

What about dhaqankeena where does it fit in your dream-nation?

I like some of your points. Though majority of them are merely dreams and not realistic. Seeing how hard-core Muslims Somalis are, the best type of politics and system we should adopt is the one Iran has. It will be more pragmatic for us.

Protection of gays? ? Please explain yourself. I can't comprehend why you would support gays. Legaloze prositition.are you even muslim? Stop trolling :comeon:

I do agree with having a secular state. I honestly beleive religion is holding us back. Maybe not religion but perhaps the whole arabization thing somalia is going through.

The whole concept of freedom is flawed sxb. We all have our limits, every society does, including the west. It's simply a eutopic idea that isn't realistic. People who want freedom of everything aren't aware of their own assumptions/definitions of freedom. It will always reflect what the society at large wants. For ex. If you want freedom to insult religion, then sure, that's easy for you to say as someone who isn't religious, whereas the vast majority of Somalis are (I'm religious yet don't care what ppl say about Islam, I'm not insecure).

On the whole though I like the list, just that you have to take into account the ppl more. I'm a fan of yours bro.

I was hoping more for like a Turkey style nation. Majority Muslim but not overly religious. Somalis werent very religious pre-1990. We just became uber conservatives after the war. So a Turkey like nation is realistic imo.

I just look at what is efficient and effective. Netherlands have legalised prostitution and marijuana, and to my knowledge they are still a flourishing country.

If gays are citizens of Somalia they deserve equal protection under the law. Thats just how it is.
