Upgrading Hargeisa's roofing

Post by LiquidHYDROGEN »

I see nice scenic Pics of Hargeisa some times but they are ruined by the ugly, cheap corrogated steel/tin roofs that are ubiqitous in the country. Somaliland has a lot of natural rocks like slate, sandstone and clay that can be used as tiles. I think it would be a good business venture for someone to set up a tile-factory. 50% of the country is just rocks and mountains anyway.

If we can build a cement factory and a useless coke factory, I think we can set up a simple roof-tile factory.

Some homes have these already around Hargeisa but the majority are the ugly tin-roofs, I agree with this.

And while we're all in refurbishing mood

A couple of these planted along the streets and road islands would be nice :whew:

It's probably imported from Yemen or Oman like every single thing in the country. These types of ideas require Somalis to think outside the box which unfortunately doesn't happen. They all want to make a quick buck on some third rate hotel.

:blessed: , I've seen them plant it in some pics at the opening of buildings and areas, but there needs to be a city-scale planting plan, across roads and atleast every neighberhood should have a few of these beauties, adapted to our semi-arid enviroment.

Since it gonna come straight from the ground, it won't cost anything for transportation or costumes. It would become affordable for majority of people.

Do you know there are natural metamorphic rock slates hills within 20m of HRG,that we can potentially quarry. That's just the ones I've seen with my own eyes. There might be some closer still. No need for a factory just quarry and shape them on site

Ilahey blessed us with nicmo and we do nothing with it. It would require a machine to shape the tiles cheaply and quickly. The manpower can be used for extracting the material from the mountains and quarries.

The problem with all territories in Somalia....is that they rely on import duties....they can generate revenue by taxing imports.
There is no policy to stimulate local industry/agriculture by raising tariffs and substituting imports.
Of course this is difficult.....revenues will fall in the short term but rise over the long run. :)
