Does Somalia have a cuisine? What truly is "Somali Food"?
I don't think we truly have a food that was actually created by us. Baasto is Italian, Somali rice is Indian/Arab, Lahoh is Ethiopian, Sabayaad is Indian,..etc etc...I can't think of anything!
It's actually so sad when you think of it, because every nation has cuisine that was actually created by them Ethiopians have injera/Doro Wat, Shiro, kitfo, etc..Nigerians have Jollof rice, Afgan soup...except for Somalia.

By this logic anything with tomatoes can't be considered Italian and anything with potatoes can't be European.

we are a nomadic animal herding tribe. the only things our people ate in the past was milk (mixed with blood) and meat (on special occasions). NOTHING ELSE. there is no such thing as Somali cuisine.AnonymousAbdi wrote:I don't think we truly have a food that was actually created by us. I wouldn't be sad about it. There is an ELEGANCE to the simplicity of the nomadic lifestyle.

I agree that we do a pretty good job making other peoples dishes better but we have no ORIGINAL cuisines. Somalis are like a mixtape rappers. We're good at taking other peoples beats/hooks and dropping better rhymes on top of them. But we have no history of making our own original songs.Warriors wrote:Um what you talking about malawax is somali most food made in ramadan is somali outside of sambushell how we make our rice is different and better than how others make if anything somalized food is better then their original example our enjello>>> ethiopian enjero

stop being stupid. there is a difference between ingridients and original dishes. pizza for example is an original italian dish even if some of the ingredients originated outside the country. however, almost everything that somalis eat is a dish that originated in a different culture. baasto was introduced to us by the italians. caanjeelo by the habash. saambus by the hindi. and so on. sure we changed it up somewhat and gave it our own spin. but they were still dishes created by other thats we adopted.Itrah wrote:By this logic anything with tomatoes can't be considered Italian and anything with potatoes can't be European.

Whatever, most national dishes are pretty similar anyway. Just a mix of grains or legumes, meat, and spices. It's not like it is rocket science and those other cultures invented something great.
