An Ottawa police officer is replacing former MP and Foreign Affairs minister John Baird as the Conservative candidate in the federal riding of Ottawa West-Nepean.
On Monday evening, members of the Ottawa West-Nepean Conservative Association cast their votes on who would replace Baird in the 2015 federal election.
Police officer Abdul Abdi took the nomination, defeating the only other candidate, businessman Scott Singer.
Voters got a chance to hear from both Singer and Abdi before casting their votes.
Baird had thrown his support behind Abdi, an eleven-year police officer who worked mostly in the riding. Abdi is a long-time volunteer with the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa as well as with the United Way.
The party would not indicate how many people were present at the nomination meeting at Centrepointe Theatre, but people present said it appeared around 500 were there.
Baird resigned his MP seat in March after 20 years in politics, and ten years as MP in Ottawa West-Nepean.
Abdi says he is grateful for the chance to represent the riding and will begin campaigning immediately. He says his top priorities are locking up violent criminals, defeating terrorists, tax relief for families, and protecting seniors.
The federal election is on October 19.

John Baird is the best friend to the Ottawa Somali community.

His chief of staff was a young Somali guy in his 20s.

The police officer has guaranteed a win in a Conservative riding. We owe our gay friend John Baird our deepest appreciation.

We will now have TWO federal MPs that are Somali in October.

I think the Conservatives will win again. He will become a minister. We are guaranteed a minister whether the Liberals or Conservatives win.

AJ,

The Somali guy in the foreground of your second last pic in your first post...his organization gets so much money from the government. I went to his Somali Centre last year that place for a meeting the office was dope af. I wonder how much the dude pockets though

Also people are speculating the nomination was rigged...having a Somali nominee will draw more voters for the Conservatives and secure this riding. But maxaa iga galay, having more Somalis in Parliament will help fix our image :win:

There's a Somali guy running for NDP in Etobicoke North I think

His organization's budget was $800,000 in 2013 - 2014 according to a former employee. He gets some funds from a Yahuud organization based in Toronto but I don't know how much. These community organizations get almost all funding from the government

Ahmed Hussen is a big time qabiilist but that's alright. He will win

NDP guy will lose. Etobicoke North has been Liberal since independence

Two MJ Federal MPs come October. Alhamdulillah, we will lead Somali-Canadians to the promised land. :blessed:

Abdi is right, the NDP candidate has zero chance of winning. How is Ahmed Hussen a qabilist tho? He ain't anymore qabilist than the average Somali.
