Did you agree how you were described in this article? Are we/other Somalis elsewhere in the diaspora fit within this description? How are we different than our cousins in Minnesota? If the discussion was of a specific clan/tribe, HiiraanOnline would have been on fire and received 400 replies from other Somalis defending their respective clans and tribes. But no response on this article.

Oh it's a somali website that is talking crap about Somalis in MN. I won't stress over it.

But let's keep this in mind. All of non-American business is owned by Somalis. Somalis own restaurants, daycares, adult day centers, clinics, rehabilitation centers and grocery stores. Without Somalis MN wouldn't thrive. I am sick and tired of other Somalis trying to shit on MN Somalis. For what? What do you have to gain? We have the mayor, governor and senator on speed dial. That's how successful Somalis are. If anyone wants run for an office in mn they have to please us first.

I'm sure almost all Somali parents in Minnesota can speak English (but of course with an accent).

The papers should stop lying about there being a language barrier; there certainly isn't one

Probably the most well off Somali diaspora. This is due to the low costs of living in Minnesota. You can rent a four bedroom home for $,1200 a month. Somalis in Minnesota have a large number of businesses because real estate values are so cheap. 21% unemployment is extremely low compared to other Somali communities in Canada and Europe.

Thegoodsheperd who lied to you? There's no way a 4 bedroom apartment is 1200 dollars. Even in small towns in MN.


The lowest rent for 2 bedroom is 1200 dollars.

I am so happy for the Somalis of MN, they are doing a million times better than us in terms of owning big businesses, masha Allah. I wish we had Somali owned car dealerships, lawyers etc, etc here in Canada. Ilahay ha u siyaadiyo inagana hana siiyo.

Edmonton and Calgary have comparable cost of living to Minneapolis. You can find a 3 bedroom home for about $1500 in a middle class neighbourhood. But incomes are much higher in Alberta.

Nothing against Minnesota but there are many Somalis in their mid 20s who are buying condos and homes here. I will be joining them this summer. I don't think there are many Somali youth who can do that in Minnesota at the moment at that age
