Paleo

Post by Sophisticate »

Hello Everyone,

I was just curious if any of you have heard about Paleo. If so, what are your thoughts?

I've actually attempted the Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) version of Paleo, which is a bit more restrictive. It's pretty much like Paleo in that you avoid soy, dairy, legumes, refined and processed sugars and oils and grains (indefinitely). However, its taken a step further since you also avoid eggs, nuts/seeds and nightshades (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers and goji berries). In other words, AIP is no different from an Elimination Diet where you remove potential trigger foods for some time and reintroduce them one-by-one to see if you experience a reaction.

Under AIP I just consumed vegetables and fruits (preferably organic), meat products (preferably free range/organic/halaal) <-- I found a place in Toronto that meets that criteria. I also consume healthy fats/oils (which are preferably organic coconut, avocado, olive and palm oil).

I personally, don't miss the SSA - Standard Somali Diet of Bariis and Baasto. In fact, none of these staples really belong to us. And geeljire traditionally didn't eat them. Then again, they weren't avid consumers of vegetables either.

The only downside is that this diet is somewhat costly for someone that's a student or not working. It does require a bit of preparation time, and you don't have luxury of eating out (unless plain salads with no dressing, fruit, and tea are your idea of eating out). On the upside my cooking is better.

If you are highly committed and driven I strongly recommend it. I was able to actually improve my health. It's kind of funny because often times people assume you are undertaking some personal health intervention for vanity (i.e. to lose weight or build muscle/get toned). And that couldn't be further from the truth, in fact my parents were actually worried I would lose weight and wither away from these changes. Alhamduilah I'm still here, so it didn't happen.

I've tried it. It takes about a week to get used to, I'd get constant headaches with the lack of carbs but once I adjusted it was great :blessed:

I did miss the baaris and baasto tho

The first few days aren't the greatest. You get a low carb flu. I had cold sweats and a migraine for 3-4 days.

After that I felt awesome. I have plenty of energy now, and can manage well without coffee.

You missed baasto, huh. Solid, what was the reason you started it. I'm curious. :lupe:

You can still make bread from scratch without grains. You can make it from any flour i.e. squash, pumpkin, coconut, almond and arrowroot to name a few. I suggest you check out pinterest for recipes. :eat:

I missed the shape I was in during my basketball days. Between work and school i wasn't doing much physical activity and was eating poorly. Didn't want to develop caloolitis so I came across the paleo diet and it helped me get back in shape along with good exercise. I'm feeling great nowadays :blessed: :win:

That was an automatic response. Some people tend to think autoimmune diseases are life threatening, although there are 80 or so known ones, some of which are milld. In any case, the reason I'm trying AIP is because of the gut-immune system connection. Essentially autoimmune diseases much like other diseases start off as non-specific inflammation, that can erode the tight junctions of the gut, causing gut hyper permeability and contributing to the development of autoimmune diseases. The sheer fact that I am attempting to heal the gut and repair it, might be contributing to the lessening of the autoimmune disease. It will take years to notice if its gone for good.

Think of it this way. I avoid artificial colours, flavours, dyes, preservatives, food additives and inflammatory foods, or those that are normally food sensitivity culprits. I think going off grains, soy and dairy is a step in the right direction. Yes; I stay away from GMOs too and eat primarily organic. :eat: And I was recommended to improve my sleep habits, mildly exercise and minimize stress. I almost forgot to mention I don't use any personal care products on my body that contain any of these culprits. :stylin:

I have lots of family that have autoimmune diseases. So if it was good for it I would have recommended it to them. But you've kinda left me more confused with your response. :|

Soph, you should read my thread on what the Chinese use, its a type of herb called adaptogens, they basically take your body to its peak and beyond.

Talks about how adaptogens cure any autoimmune disease.
