In the 1990s, when the Canadian ethicist Margaret Somerville began to speak and write critically about the non-therapeutic circumcision of infant boys, she was attacked for even addressing the subject in public. In her book The Ethical Canary, she says her critics accused her of ‘detracting from the horror of female genital mutilation and weakening the case against it by speaking about it and infant male circumcision in the same context and pointing out that the same ethical and legal principles applied to both’.

She wasn’t alone. The anthropologist Kirsten Bell has advanced similar arguments in her university lectures, provoking a reaction that was ‘immediate and hostile … How dare I mention these two entirely different operations in the same breath! How dare I compare the innocuous and beneficial removal of the foreskin with the extreme mutilations enacted against females in other societies!’

There’s a problem with these claims. Almost every one of them is untrue or severely misleading

It’s easy to see where these reactions are coming from. One frequent claim is that FGM is analogous to ‘castration’ or a ‘total penectomy’. Put that way, anyone who tried to compare the two on ethical (or other) grounds would be making a serious mistake – anatomically, at the very least.

You often hear that genital mutilation and male circumcision are very different. FGM is barbaric and crippling (‘always torture’, as the Guardian columnist Tanya Gold wrote recently), whereas male circumcision is comparatively inconsequential. Male circumcision is a ‘minor’ intervention that might even confer health benefits, whereas FGM is a drastic intervention with no health benefits, and only causes harm. The ‘prime motive’ for FGM is to control women’s sexuality; it is inherently sexist and discriminatory and is an expression of male power and domination. That’s just not true for male circumcision.

Unfortunately, there’s a problem with these claims. Almost every one of them is untrue, or severely misleading. They derive from a superficial understanding of both FGM and male circumcision; and they are inconsistent with what scholars have known about these practices for well over a decade. It’s time to re-examine what we ‘know’ about these controversial customs.

Why do all these people suffer from Short sightedness they never seem to comprehend the aftermath of their action. Female circumcision is what keeping the spread of HIV and teen pregnancy down.

There is a proven benefit for male circumcision. Hiv infection is lower in circumcised penis. (es) But more importantly--a circumcised penis has a prominence in appearance. An uncircumcised penis looks like, wobbly, or warmly. Disgusting. Not to mention, the clear cut strength of a circumcision promotes heightened sensation during penetration. Islam is all about hygiene and clean-ness. Circumcision male promotes hygiene.


For women it serves no purpose at all, other than fulfils the desire of the man---a misogynist who deep, deep down fears and shudders at the thought of a 'loose' woman who has discovered the sensation of clitoris sensation.

Men can pull their foreskin down and wash that area like women wash around the labia.

Are you seriously suggesting this. It is highly important to circumsize boys for hygienic reasons. Not to mention we're ment to do this in Islam. For girls absolutely it's wrong. So gedo girl would you not circumsize your son? Am actaully circumsizing my son tomorow.

I think people take it too far and end up doing serious harm. I would share pictures from the internet with deformities caused by circumcision but you can imagine them. I know at least boys who had their futures destroyed by circumcision, they are practically eunuchs.

I agree with hyper. A man or teenager is in a much better position to handle circumcision.

the fact that u know what a eunuch is---is HIGHLY interesting and orgasmic.

You can't compare the two FGM is banned in most countries and circumcision is not. And you do a disservice when you compare FGM and circumcision. FGM has severe Medical and Health consequences nothing close to circumcision.

They can....but circumcision is more than just hygeine reasons.....they do it for health reason, religion reasons , cosmetic reasons.

There is 210,000 to 440,000 patients die each year in hospitals because of mistakes. Yet we don't tell people don't go to the doctors because they will kill you. There is complications in most surgeries the odds of complications with circumcision is 1 in 500.

Don't buy into the circumcision fear mongering by the alarmist and propagandists.

Male circumcision is a must in Islam. No amount of fake campaigns in the West will have an impact on Muslims from fulfilling their religious obligation.

Thanks for sharing the article. I think both male and female children should be equally protected. Since it is their body, they have a right to decide for themselves when they are adults -- and have informed themselves.

FGM is wrong, female circumcision is within the deen and also has some health benefits to it. The fircoon style mutilation that happens in east africa is disgusting and not supported by the diin. As previous posters said nothing will deter us from practicing our diin.
