Xildiid,

Sxb for years I have been trying to perfect my Somali writing skills. I am not bad Alhamdulillah nin yohow(is that correct?) but
I keep making these small mistakes and honest to God I I have no clue on how to overcome them.

For example
I wrote
Maxishoodaan
You wrote ma xishoodan (correctly I think)

My problem is, I don't know when to use the double aa or ee or double ii or uu

I.e maxishoodaan
I have two oo correctly but then again proceeded to add aa as in ma xishoo- daan instead of -dan like you did

How do I get rid of this small mistakes without sitting in class to learn it from a proper teacher? I believe I don't need extensive tutoring but will go along your guidance if you say I need one.
You see other Somalis born in qurbaha but whose parents are born in Somali proper from my experience only need to learn the basic use of use of the letters c and its pronunciation in Somali alphabet ceyn and x for xa etc etc. that's all they need and they are home.

I am among the few sujus who can write and read Somali adequately but still lacking in some small areas like the above. Bal nin yohow talo keen.

I wrote and I quote "cadey" nabeela and likes laughed at it. Uqdadii berigaas igu dhacdey ilaa maanta kama so waaqsanin. Didnt even bother to learn the correct spelling.

COOL-MAN,

Bro, it's quite simple. It all depends on the vowels. As a kid I was taught to pronounce the word if I was in doubt and write as it sounds i.e if it was a long vowel I would write aa or ee or uu etc.

For instance Bar (teach, it can also mean wart) and Baar (a kind of tree common in riverine areas and wadis).

Your other example is two words, so you write it as two seperate words.

Also there this story that happened in Somalia many decades back. Nin cadaan ah ayaa yiri afsomaaligii waan dhameeye. This is after learning the language for over thirty years. An old man said to him adeer ma hubtaa??
Odeygi cadaanka oozing of assured self confidence ayaa soo boodey oo yiri haa walle waan hubaa
He told him wait a minute summoned a young of ten seven years old. And said to both cagihiina wax ka daya. The little boy bolted out. Odeygi cadaanka intuu dhulka fariistey ayuu cagihiisa firiis u galay

Xildiid,

Thanks that helps. To write it as it sounds you say? Why haven't I thought of that beri hore? thanks

Bal the correct spelling of cadey explained above soo qor bal

Also how is my afsomaali above? Check and point out mistakes it will help alot

To be honest, I don't see anything wrong with your Somali and the only thing I can point out is 'Af Soomaaligii' and not 'AfSoomaaligii', since it's two words. If it's two words seperate them. Sometimes I write 'laysku' when I should write 'la isku'. On the forum I'm quite informal in my writing.

I would write Caday.

This same story was told to me by my grandfather, except the guy was a British soldier and the event happened in the north. Funny story though.

I would love to learn the Somali language, too. I put a bit of an effort to write a word or two in Somali here, but I got long ways to go. It is a rich language and I am not sure I can master it from here unless I submerge myself in the customs of the people by moving back. Even that, Djibouti-Somali is a bit of a suspect.

For example: I hate saying Huuno to guys, sounds feminine. Boy, do I love saying Huuno to girls :) .
