They can still get that education in prison.
Plenty of time to do all the courses they want. Prisons mainly offer basic numeracy and literacy. But they can always apply to outside colleges and university. Carry on from where they left off the last time they were in schools/college/university.

There are even organisation that can help with the fees and all it takes is a letter.
Doing correspondence course from xabsiga they can also get tutors who will visit them inside.

All this bright youngsters getting locked up. But man if they could listen. Especially those doing double digits sentences. By the time they finish their sentence they will be coming out to job waiting outside.

The criminal records doesn't really restrict you in your life in the UK that much.

If companies asks for criminal records, they must have good reason to do so. Usually it's working with kids (and students), security and banking that needs a criminal check but everything else, it's all good.
