Ethiopia: Appeal for $1.4 billion in drought aid

Food assistance is the highest priority as 10.2 million people suffer from scarcity due to the drought

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia

The Ethiopian government and international organizations on Friday launched a joint appeal to raise $1.4 billion to provide emergency assistance to the 10.2 million people in the country suffering from the extended drought.

The failure of two consecutive rainy seasons, followed by weak summer rain that normally waters crops to feed a large part of the country, has drastically reduced the food supply in six Ethiopian regions.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the Food and Agriculture Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) partnered with the Ethiopia Humanitarian Country Team in the appeal.

The drought is expected to worsen in the months ahead, the statement said.

“The highest priority remains food - some $1.1 billion is urgently required for emergency food assistance,” Gillian Mellsop, UNICEF’s Representative to Ethiopia, said in the statement.

The Ethiopia Country Team called on development partners and development assistance groups to continue their assistance and to find sustainable solutions for the country.

So much for Ethiopia's vaunted self-sufficiency and being the powerhouse of East Africa!

Ethiopia is not as vulnerable as Somalia. The Gov already allocated $300mn for the drought but it needs more and it will get it.

The problem is it will not distribute fairly giving the bulk to the Tigray region. Somali Region and Afar will be the hardest hit, where people are already starving. Abdi Iley and Co. will not mention that except dhaanto and we killed 'nabadiid'. You know their usual show.

Amhara, Gambella, Oromia, Benishangul-Gumuz are all fertile land with vast water bodies. In Gambella its actually flooding and they too need assistance.

As for your comment about SL being more effected, this year it looks like it maybe in certain parts but in the last famine more than 300,000 people starved in southern Somalia and about 10 people in Somaliland. One contributing factor is southern Somalis are addicted to handouts and without it they will all starve in matter of five months. Don't let the two rivers fool you. They still don't know how to build a canal or small channel...they rather go to Kenyan side and ask for urgent Aid. No excuses. Their militias were no bigger nor more dangerous than SNM, Gidabursi, Dhulos, Warsangeli---SNA loyalists. Still all disarmed without Eldoret conference, 300 conferences in Nairobi hotel, AMISOM, Gabre. It's all about attitudes and culture.

Even today SL will deal with it better than Somalia.

Simply because there is a drought does not automatically mean there will be a famine. For example South Africa is experiencing its worst drought in a centenary – yet no one would argue that a famine is imminent or inevitable in South Africa!

South Africa in midst of 'epic drought'
At least 2.7 million households affected in worst drought to hit the country since the 1980s, government officials say.

This applies to the US too , California is experiencing a four year drought.

iidoor entity appealed for and received humanitarian aid from the international community and NGOs to ameliorate the devastation caused by drought in 2010 and 2012.

SOMALIA: Drought-hit Somaliland pleads for aid
HARGEISA, 16 February 2010 (IRIN) - Officials in Somalia's self-declared independent republic of Somaliland have appealed to the international community to provide humanitarian aid for hundreds of thousands of people, especially children, in the wake of prolonged drought.

"The affected population is estimated at about 40 percent of Somaliland's 3.5 million, which is equivalent to 1.4 million people," Ali Ibrahim, Minister for Planning and National Aid Co-ordination, told IRIN.

SOMALIA: Drought affecting thousands in Somaliland
HARGEISA, 30 March 2012 (IRIN) - Officials in the self-declared republic of Somaliland, northwestern Somalia, are appealing for food aid and potable water for thousands of families who have lost their livelihoods in the current drought.

“You can see from far children running to the road waving empty bottles asking you for water and bread or biscuits,” Hussein Muhumed Hog, Somaliland's health minister, told IRIN.

Families in the western Somaliland areas of Garba dadar, Gargaara bari, Gerisa and Osoli have lost all their livestock and do not have regular food supplies, said Hog, adding that other families in the Gargaara and Gerrisa areas (also in the west) are now relying on food provided under the UN World Food Programme’s (WFP’s) food-for-work initiative, and money sent in by Somalis abroad. Ceel la helay, north of the capital Hargeisa, is also affected.

Again, the iidoor entity has appealed for international aid to alleviate the drought crisis of 2015.

Somaliland appeals urgent humanitarian assistance to drought-affected people
HARGEISA-A high level meeting has taken place n Hargeisa which the country’s Deputy President H.E Abdirahman Abdilahi Ismail “Sayli’i ” has chaired and saw the attendance of both international and local organisations based in Somaliland.

The mission of the meeting was to appeal to aid agencies for assistance to Salel, Awdal and Gebiley regions which the drought hit.
Somaliland government has today called on international relief organizations to launch a life-saving campaign to prevent a humanitarian disaster.

Famine in Ethiopia like anywhere in the world is man-made. Politics whether it be through state or non-state negligence, incompetence or deliberate policy exacerbates the problem of a drought into a famine. It is no coincidence that famine occurs in areas where the is poor governance, authoritarianism, political turmoil and war.

Ethiopia’s reoccurring famine is due to the deliberate policies of successive Ethiopian regimes - that used famine as a weapon of war and oppression.

The Cause of Ethiopia's Recurrent Famine Is Not Drought, It Is Authoritarianism

Ethiopia drought 'leaves 10 million without food'

Image

Ethiopia's government has increased to 10.1 million the estimated number of people who desperately need food aid because of a drought. More than half of them are children, Save the Children says.

The drought, blamed on the El Nino weather phenomenon caused by Pacific Ocean warming, was the worst in 50 years, the charity added.
In November, the UN children's charity put the number of Ethiopians threatened by hunger at 8.2 million.

The government has launched a huge national effort, allocating nearly $200m (£130m) to deal with the food crisis, says BBC Africa correspondent Alastair Leithead.

But with 10.1 million people - or a tenth of the population - affected by a failure of both harvests this year in parts of Ethiopia, more international aid would be needed, he adds.
