Canadian Somalis

I've noticed Canadian Somali youth seem more liberal and more 'hood' than Somalis from the UK or continental Europe. Something about their mannerisms, speech and slang suggests a strong African American influence. They also seem less pre-occupied with religion and Arabic clothing (khamiz/abayah) and hijabs than UK Somalis. Why is this?

P.S are Somalis the largest black ethnic group in Canada?

No its the jamaican slang and hip hop music that influences them same like the american ones it's the hip hop music they think their gangsta till they shot or die.

young Somali males are over represented in the UK prison system.I don't think they are any less hood,but there are less firearms in the UK and thus Canada gets more headlines because of the body count.secondly,Canadian and UK Somali youth,especially those in Toronto,Canada,share some linguistic similarities with regards to slang due to strong Jamaican influences.

What has changed over the past 10 years in the UK is that the local youths have created their own subaltern street culture(UK grime and rap music).although the U.S. hip hop influence still persists,the Youths are as likely to be influenced by UK artists and slang than USA street mannerisms.

As for the liberal question,there is less integration and assimilation in Europe.most immigrant communities keep themselves to themselves.identities centering around the American Dream and black lives matter are far more accessible and easier to subscribe to in the North America.

That said,I believe the extent of liberalism in Canada is grossly exaggerated by some people.there are as many hijabs in Canada as there are in London.

Aside from all the generalizations in this thread, I think Canadians are less preoccupied with Arab/paki culture because to us, Somalis are either gashantis/male equivalent or "western". We don't tend to dress or act like any other culture unless you mean the clowns who think they are Jamaican lol

In Birmingham I noticed the more Muslim a Somali is, the more Arab/East Asian they behave. As though Somali Daqan is subpar.

Ohio is right, there are more rowdy Somalis in Toronto than Ottawa, but heads up, a lot of the deported Somalis I met in Djibouti were from Ottawa lol
