When I was a kid/preteen learning the Quran,I, like most of you all I'm sure, was always told to memorize the Quran, but never actually understand what Allah was telling us.

All the Quran teachers I've had never bothered to explain the meaning of the Quran. We just memorized it like robots and never understood it.

This is what I don't get about Islam, what's the point of memorizing something without knowing what it means? Lol. Isn't that a pretty ridiculous?

This is not the teachings of my Quran teacher only, this is the teachings of all Quran teachers, regardless of ethnicity. All Muslims are generally taught to memorize the Quran, rather than to understand the content in which we are memorizing.

And to deny this, is a clear sign of delusion and denial.

Anyways, nothing wrong with memorizing per se although it's waste of time memorizing something you can always look up. I live by Einstein's maxim of never memorizing something you can simply look up. In this day and age, critical thinking and the ability to discern facts from near facts is more valuable.

Memorising Qur'an as an entry point to Islamic knowledge is something that was passed on from the Sahabah, to the pious predecessors of Islam and right through to subsequent generations. Of course the early Muslims had the luxury to accompany memorising with the understanding since it was revealed in their native tongue & language that was used then.

I do agree memorising without tafseer is problematic & lessens the spiritual connection we obtain from reading the Qu'ran.


Places like Somalia, you have more time allocated to dugsi so they can afford to begin with memorising the Quran and later teach tagseer, tajweed, Hadith & Fiqh.

Dugsi's that are simulated in the diaspora really need to revolutionise the way the teach, with limited time merely memorising Qu'ran isn't going to suffice anymore.

Because if you knew the real meanings of those surahs, then you probably turn into an agnostic overnight. Thats assuming your a person with a sound moral compass.

Because unlike God, religion is for the brain dead dumb-ass, who never use their God given mind to ask critical questions but live as slaves of fear their entire life. Memorizing an entire book that is written in a foreign old language, which you don't understand a word, is a west of time, resources and most of all a waste of a wonderfully created mind. It is almost a crime against the mind.

Too many gaalo qurunley coming out of the woods and the one named Renis has been the worst, attacking a religion which they don't believe. Many atheists act is if they don't follow a particular religion when truth is their false god is lust, and men like the racist Darwin, the Islamophobe Chris Hitchens, and many other godless, extremist feminist leaders are their false prophets.

Back to the topic, why Muslims should memorize the Quran? I will provide my answer to that question in the next comment as I don't want to put it in the same level as my comment to the godless gaalo-qurunley.
