Solar cell

Post by 7anseba »

I'm curious to know if anybody has experience of building, constructing or working with solar cell panels? Specifically for residential use, which in that case I would like to know how it has worked out for you? Are they reliable? Are they durable? Are they easy to repair?

Who is your manufacturer/supplier? Reliability, durability, and the main quality issues are all functions of the manufacturer. The main issue you will find will mostly be aesthetic and nothing to do with impairing performance or safety hazards. The ease of which you can repair depends on the nature of the damage. Many manufacturers generally have a categorization system for a given damaged panel, with class A/1 generally being the most common and easiest to fix. Anything beyond that and you must have either intentionally tried to break the panel or its something that screwed up on the manufacturer's end.

You see I'm a complete beginner when it comes to solar cell panels. Therefore I would be interested to know which manufacturer is reliable when it comes to performance and quality? Also I would be interested to know if its difficult to build your own high performing quality solar cell panel?

That is something you're going to have to do your own research, which should be no issue if you're a serious buyer. I haven't worked in this industry in many years, so my knowledge is very rusty on this stuff. This is the last forum you should be asking for something like this.

As for building your own high performing quality solar cell panel, I would say don't waste your time. It might be good for a scientific project such as demonstrating the practical applications of the photoelectric effect, but anything you build outside of a state-of-the-art lab and without the necessary lab grunts will always waste much more energy than it produces, making it practically useless. Think about building a functioning and practical solar panel as building a functioning and practical car. Sounds fun in principle and could be a good educational exercise in the long run, but there's a reason why people don't drive DIY cars.
