The railway was the brain child of Menelik II, who in my opinion was probably the greatest politician, strategist and thinker in Africa in the industrial and information age.

He told the French he do accept to co-exist as long as they built the railway so he can move his military and arms fast across the country.

He used the Russians against the Ottoman, the Americans against the Russians, the British against the Italians, Italians against the French and so forth.

For example he bought shares in American railways and offered them base in Eritrea before "Russian blockades Res Sea and the Suez Canal", he went to the Italians for arms when French refused entertaining them with "no invasion of your north territory".

He entertained the British by offering their passage to their Sudan, Kenya, SL, Aden.
