2016: Top 5 Strongest African Countries

Post by PureQ »

1. Egypt
Egyptian military is the strongest among other countries in Africa due to the sheer size of its armed forces. Egyptian soldiers are well-equipped and well-trained, but are inferior to Israeli soldiers in terms of weaponry and training. More than 1.5 million individuals reach the army age every year. It has more than 800 military aircraft and 200 helicopters.

2. Algeria
Algerian military is made up of modern army, navy and air force. Frontline personnel number more 120,000 active personnel, which is well-equipped and it has nearly 2,000 armored fighting vehicles at its disposal. Algeria also has the added benefit of its own oil reserves, allowing it to use its own fuel to power tanks, aircraft carriers, naval vessels, and more. Algeria continues to be among the African countries with the best military power.

3. Ethiopia
Ethiopia has the third strongest military on the African continent as a result of both their large population and their long independence from colonization. As a landlocked country, it has focused its resources on building its army and air force to an impressive degree. With a population of 38 million people, 24 million of the citizens are considered to be fit for active service. Ethiopia reportedly had around 182,500 personnel in their ground forces and a further 3,000 air force personnel.

4. South Africa
The country has got what it takes to be among the top countries in Africa strong enough to be recognized. South Africa uses its very advanced army for pacification and international cooperation. Its aircraft and naval vessels are especially well-equipped with the latest technology, and though the country has less than 88,000 active front-line personnel and 17,000 active reserve personnel, it has the capabilities and manpower for much more.

5. Nigeria
Nigeria has the second largest army by number of troops on the continent, but due to political instability and lack of equipment it has been ranked just the 5th strongest country in Africa. The country has more than 1,400 armoured vehicles, 360 tanks, and 6,000 logistical vehicles at its disposal, as well as nearly 300 aircraft and 25 high-powered naval vessels. The army has been criticised for their heavy-handed manner in dealing with civilians during anti- Boko Haram operation in the North East. The previous year Nigeria occupied the 4th place.

ethiopia cant be in top 3..not even top 10.
lack of training
lack of advanced weaponry
lack in surveillance intelligence

all they have is sheer numbers in gullible oromo farmers.

80's weaponry
90's logistics
and cold war training does not give you 3rd best army in africa.

walahi i strongly believe somaliland + puntland can take ethiopia to the cleaners on a good day.

Ethiopia has fought a lot of wars, both external and internal in the last 100 years including against Egypt which they succeeded.

Somalia? None beside 1977 when Barre cowardly attacked them when Mengistu suffered from headaches because he was facing a civil war and war with Eritrea like like 20 fronts at the same time.

Result? Ethiopia remained one despite having gone through countless of wars that threaten to disintegrate the country but yet, continued to remain one.

Somalia ended up with disintegration facing several clan states which brought Somalweyn into coffin. Puntland and Somaliland together stand no chance against Ethiopia. Adis Ababa can just order Puntland to attack Somaliland and vice versa whenever they want. Basically use and abuse them as puppets.

Kenya can't even defend their territories from Ethiopian attacks which happens often recently due to OLF activities. Kenya is military stronger than Swahil countries which means Ethiopia is stronger than all East African countries.

Not to mention, Ethiopian army under Amhara were more established militarized than current Tigrean who has more covert militia type army yet Tigreans made sure they remained the top power of Sub saharan Africa. It's all about experience. Plus, they manufacture their own weapons like Jungle79 posted.

Everyone knows they have massive intelligence operative in the Horns which is why there have been no shabaab or ethnic attacks.

Somalia has nothing and consider it as an foreign invasion if other Somalis attack them but they do nothing when AMISOM comes in.

Jungle79 and PureQ I'm not sure about that one, I'm pretty sure if ethiopia goes to war with anyone in the horn of africa it will backfire on them and spill over across into it's borders that's why ethiopia has been playing the african union card to maneuver thru the political tangled web in horn of africa.

Ethiopian army are divided through ethnic lines. If they decide to launch a full scale invasion in one of those countries in East Africa, the chance of soldiers deserting is high and will get their opportunity to rebel back home.

This is what happened when they invaded Eritrea in the 1960s, they ended up in a civil war when Derg came to power.

There is no ranking in Africa, unpredictable times can occur unlike Western countries where everyone who would die in the name of nationalism. They abide by nationalism, not ethnicism or tribalism like Africa.

i remember ethiopian soldiers crossing the red Sea in 2006 when they faced alshabaab.. the only reason why they do what they do in the south is because nobody challenges them..
.if challenged their ill disciplined lines will falter as easy as pack of cards..their is no loyalty or cause tht unites tht poorly trained milita..

Ethiopias army today is not the same as 2000,
they have cut numbers sharply from 600,000 untrained peasant levies, in 1991
to 300,000 in 2000.
today they number ~180,000 and they are shrinking even more as they get rid of untrained and keep the better trained troops.

they are however extremly vulnerable to ATGM.
todays market is saturated with them, because the saudis are giving them out like candy to syrian rebels,
and the libyan rebels stole over 10,000 from qadafis warehouses and sold most of them.

if the Islamic courts had just 50 TOW's/MILANS or Kornets in 2006 and avoided a frontal war with ethiopia,
they would have won, because the ethiopian army is not very mobile..
they would have lost all their tanks and apc's and would be vulnerable to fast moving technicals.
and they did not have enough helicopters to cancel out the technicals.

so yeah ethiopia is capable but still limited..
