He was a Nigerian and his name was Ahmet Ali Effendi (Çelikten). This was the year 1916.

100 years since the first black pilot.

The Ottoman Empire had many black soldiers since its foundation but the late Sultans castrated the black men often keeping them as body guards especially in the Harem. They were called Eunuch and their chief/leader was called Kizlar Agazi (a term Ottoman later introduced to Eritrea and north Ethiopia, today TPLF's special commando unit are called Agazi).

There was a lot of misleading source about him and how it confused readers about his background but the Turks says he is Turkish.

His name is Ahmet Ali Çelikten. There were African tribes that settled in present Turkey many centuries ago under Ottoman and were assimilated (hence the Turkish sounding name). They are considered as a African-Turkish minority. They moved to Turkey through slavery and the latter centuries assimilated into Ottoman society.

Afro-Turks – Turkish Citizens of African descent – have gained recognition from the Turkish government over the last few years. They are the descendants of the black citizens of the Ottoman Empire. Afro Turks have Turkish names; over time they adopted Turkish traditions and now practice Islam as their religion.

Anyways, I was reading lost Islamic history about this pilot and behind this message is how the Ottomans were not racist when it comes to conscripting pilots unlike the colonial powers who only recruited whites.
