Somali Names

Post by shimbiraale »

In light of the prevalence of non-religious Arab names in the Somali community, let us post traditional Somali names with their meanings, if possible. When Somalis do give their children traditional names, they tend to use the same twenty names. We all likely know a dozen Sagals and Fadumos. Let's get a little creative.

AirBitaale, you're right, Dahir is an Arab name. Just goes to show how deeply ingrained those names are in our communities that some of us cough me cough confuse them with Somali names. Farax, however, may just be as widespread as the name Sofia/Safiya and Sara/Zara/Sahro is in many cultures. So I wouldn't say that is it only an Arab name.
