Xassan sh UAE Berbera contract

Post by NomadicSoul1 »

Somalia's president recently tried to sign
an agreement with the United Arab Emirates on renting Berbera airport. I'm just
trying to figure put the logic behind a deal that would not go through. Anyone else read about this?

MOGADISHU— The President of Somalia, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud is doing all his power to convince the UAE that he has the overall power to grant the port of Berbera in order to have a base.

The president is recently reported having dispatched his foreign affairs minister, Abdisalan Hadliye to Abu Dhabi to persuade the UAE gov’t to sign a deal that will pave the way for UAE military to launch air strikes against the Huthi militia in Yemen.

The Somalia government is determined to receive the money in exchange of the use of Berbera port in Somaliland.

Mr. Hasan Sheikh has ordered the UAE ambassador to Somalia to facilitate the talks and the agreement.

The president is believed to have said that once the Federal government signs a deal with the UAE then the UAE will again require to sign an other agreement with Somaliland which controls the port.

UAE military plane landed at Berbera airport which was on board by senior UAE military officials and are said to have met with government officail.

Details are sketchy over the issues the two sides discussed.

President Silanyo is expected to travel to UAE this week according to unconfirmed reports.

The UAE deals with Somalia and Somaliland differently and has a diplomatic mission to Mogadishu.
