Official music of the Horn of Africa thread

Post by Hararboy »

I made this thread to celebrate the diversity of music in the Horn of Africa. Post tracks from any ethnic groups within the horn. No trolling or ethnic hatred.

I like traditional Amharic music specifically eskista.

In the mainstream Amharic I like singers such as Temu, Jacky and Teddy.

I like some traditional Somali music including dhaanto, jandheer, hirmo and Saylaci.

Tigringya singers such as Wedi Maki, Solomon Yekuno Amlak are fantastic including his hit song Bejaki (Please).

Eritrea has few good female singers but female artists music never really appeal to me because they whine too much about their sorry lives or love.

Most of my home boys produce patriotic or political songs such as Teddy's Tikur Sew (black man), Jacky's Bandiraw (the flag) or Solomon's Adey Zeniwerki (not certain on spelling or meaning but I know adey means country As I understand coz I'm familiar with the term wedi adey).

The son of Enderta awraja rather has mind provoking name because Amhara claim direct descendant of Solomon. Yekuno Amlak was the man who restored Solomonic dynasty after almost 400 years of Agew rule in the late 12th century.

So it's odd to see a Tigrai that combined the names of Amhara emperors.

I like Saho music too.

Let me share one song by the Agews of northern Wollo.

The Agews are very artistic both in literary and visional arts.

Their music is very creative and exciting but most cannot spot them from the Amhara since Agews lost most of their Cushitic language having ruled Ethiopia almost 400 years and further 900 years on and off with the Amhara.

The song is called Yehagere Lij. I'm not 100% sure but my understanding is it means The national child/son. I know lij is child while hager is country and yehager is national.

Check out the dance from 2:30 or 4:55

The Agew girls killed it!
