how would you approach these problems

Post by thehappyone »

So I currently work for a delivery company. For coresspondence we use citrix and windows server 2012, which are very common and up to date softwares for big firms. But for the actual deliveries (taking orders, dispatching etc) we use MS-DOS (wow right?). Ofcourse there are many problems as a consequence. Customers getting the wrong delivery, items, etc.

Last week I've been working on an app that, if implimented correctly, will solve more than 50% of the issues were having. It's a very simple app, using only html5 and javascript, but it will be so usefull and save the company 10's of thousands of pounds every year (no exaggeration). This leads me to two issues.

1. if I show them this app will I come accross as weird/loner. I don't want to seem like someone who takes his work home. It only took me a few hours to make it, and it will probably take me another two or so to perfect it. How do I come over this hurdle?

2. If get over 1, how do I monetise it. How do I pitch, what do I say. I go to the manager, ask him if he got 5 minutes, show him. Hes impressed and says wow thats really good. Then what... do I say something like, I took me alot of time to make this I want x amount. Or do I let them use it, and after couple weeks demand money or take it away.

Many companies encourage/empower employees to propose solutions (some even pay incentives).

My suggestion is this; write an email /talk to your boss ( the decision maker) and discuss with him/her about the prevailing problems. You then ask him/her if you can propose a solution to remedy it. I am sure they will say yes. You then ask for a week -paid- to devote your time to the problem/solution. When you have done that make sure to engage a solicitor (intellectual property rights) and register your app with the authority.

Next, call your employer and ask for a face to face meeting. Tell him/her that you found a solution. You then ask for a license fee. This is common. Alternatively, you can sell them the rights.

Good luck. I will bill you for this advice.

Talk to the guy at the very top.Either by email or snail mail.Either way you need to have a paper trail in case there are shenanigans further on down the line.Once you have opened a dialogue with the person that can make decisions. It will be smooth sailing because it would be a stupid company that would turn down a chance to improve there profits. As for the loner rubbish that's just exactly what it is.Rubbish!.

Thanks for the tips guys. My manager is a really good black guy and he's fond of me. I'm gonna send him a text, and that will be my paper trail. I trust him to do the right thing if it works out.

I did a one year course in college, but mostly self taught. Udemy and codeacademy are great

Go talk to the head of IT guy and show him ur App/program and tell him how it could help the company.

If you want to make money off of it, create ur own company, approach the CEO/IT guy, and tell them to buy it.
