The president of Uganda, has signed a bill into law that calls on the court to jail parents who fail to have their children vaccinated.
President Yoweri Museveni said that parents who fail to vaccinate their children will face up to six months in jail.
The new law will also require schools to not accept children without a completed immunization card.
The new law will help the government achieve its goal of a 100 percent vaccination rate, Health Minister Sarah Achieng Opendi said.
Some members of religious sects have refused to allow their children to be vaccinated, and they now face jail time.
The government passed the new vaccination law after several life-threatening diseases such as polio and meningitis reemerged as a dangerous threat.
3 percent of children are currently not vaccinated, mostly members of the religious sector.
