I remember having a conversation with a college teacher sometime last year, and she told me that Somalis are the only immigrants in the UK that really don't care what area the council moves them, as long as they recieve a good house. Elaboarating further, she also told me that other Muslim minorities such as South Asians and Arabs only moved to neighbourhoods with a significant immigrant community.
She narrated a story of a Somali family that were given a flat in a deprived chav ( 'redneck'/ 'white trash' in N.American slang) neighbourhood. The Somali family faced a torrent of verbal abuse as soon as they moved in to their new home, they tolerated it instead of reporting it to the police (who wouldn't do a thing about it anyway), expecting their racist neigbours would eventually become bored. Instead, the situation escelated into vandalism and the Somali father decided to take matters into his own hand. He phoned up his mates from the internet cafes in and around a famous skinny neigbourhood called 'Stratford' . Three cars packed with middle-aged Somali men armed with cricket bats turned up outside his flat, he showed them the flats of 5 to 6 of the main culprit racist families, the Somali men then broke down their doors and went inside the homes of those families, and beat the living daylights out of them before destroying their furniture inside of their homes with the cricket bats they were carrying. The Somali men then made their escape just before the police turned up.
The traumatized racist chavs who couldn't comprehend what just happened to them, pointed their fingers at the sole Somali family for being responsible for their ordeal. The police knocked on the door of the Somali family and asked the father if he saw anything; he replied that he wasn't present when the crime took place. The coppers then filed an incident report and left, well-confused. The Somali family weren't subjected to racist abuse from that day onwards, and after a couple of months their racist but now tamed neighbours began to move out and other Somali families began to move in to that area, eventually changing it into a Somali majority neighbourhood.
I've heard stories like these before taking places in America too. My conclusion is, that as Somalis we are a traditionally nomadic society who move from one place to another peacefully or if confronted, violently. For example, if a certain clan moved into a particular grazing area and faced resistance from native clans, they would settle that grazing dispute with bullets instead of swallowing their pride and retreating. This 'Geeljire' spirit has never left us, even after the war broke out and Somalis moved to all four corners of the world.
