Secondly, we Somalis and alcohol don't mix and should never socialise with the mad bottle. There are very few who drink moderately, most Somali drinkers I know drink excessively. Once, I asked a group of Somali drinkers why they do drink too much? Most said that if they are sinning and the community considers them alcoholics, then, they better drink heavy. Alcohol intoxication causes many social problems be it physical or mental abuse within our community. Should the community promote awareness of the dangers and encourage harm minimisation to the addicts to drink less and moderately?

And as for drinking Khamri, Somalis are light weight and don't know how to handle their liquor. They get all sloppy and start trouble after few drinks. Thats more true in Canada than anywhere else. I have seen it with my own eyes. Drunk Somalis starting a fight at a wedding and cops were called in.

Agreed . I think the longer a population has been drinking alcohol the better it can cope with it , it goes with genetics I believe . Look at the brave native indians , they don't have a set in defense mechanism against it . In Africa black people always drank alcohol whether it is from palm or whatever juice they would forment . The ones like the South Sudanese who have no history of drinking alcohol end up like the natives here , bad mix.

In reply to the OP, some Somalis probably can handle their drink. Regardless of whether they can handle it or not, it really is the worst balwad. A lot of people , in general so inc. cadaans, drink excessively cos they are depressed etc. but it's a depressant so it make things worse.

Anyhow Khamri is not a Somali word. In nomadic Somalia, the first guy who drunk khamri called it "Dhanaanka".

A Somali man who used to drink khamri wanted to marry a woman. Another man was aware of the man's addictions. He came up this little geeraar in order to warn the lady about what she was getting into:
